Six Mountain Hawks Set For NCAA Championships In Philadelphia

3/18/2025 11:18:00 AM | Men's Wrestling

BETHLEHEM, Pa.  – After winning its 39th EIWA team championship and crowning four individual EIWA champions, Lehigh has qualified six wrestlers for the 94th NCAA Championships, Mar. 20-22 at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.  The Mountain Hawks' four individual champions were junior Sheldon Seymour (125), first-year Logan Rozynski (157), senior Michael Beard (197) and graduate student Owen Trephan (285). EIWA finalists Malyke Hines (149) and Caden Rogers (184) added at-large bids to join the four individual champions. Beard and Trephan earned top five seeds to lead the Lehigh contingent when seeds and brackets were unveiled last week.

Lehigh has had at least one All-American in 14 of the last 15 years, including Beard, who finished eighth last year in Kansas City. The Mountain Hawks had three All-Americans at last year's NCAA Championship and will be looking to get back into the top 10 for the first time since 2012 after finishing 15th last year.

Three of Lehigh's six NCAA qualifiers have previous NCAA Tournament experience. Senior Malyke Hines will wrestle in his fifth straight tournament. He reached the round of 12 in 2023. Senior Michael Beard is wrestling in his fourth. Beard finished eighth at 197 last year and finished seventh at 197 competing for Penn State in 2021. Graduate student Owen Trephan makes his Lehigh NCAA Tournament debut after going 3-4 competing for NC State the last two years. Sheldon Seymour (125), Logan Rozynski (157) and Caden Rogers (184) will compete at NCAAs for the first time.

Powered by four individual champions, Lehigh captured its first EIWA team championship in four years with a triumph in front of the home fans March 7-8 at Stabler Arena. Sheldon Seymour (125), Logan Rozynski (157), Michael Beard (197) and Owen Trephan (285) won individual EIWA titles for the Mountain Hawks, who totaled 143.5 points over the two-day tournament to win their league-leading 39th team championship and first since 2021. Lehigh placed six wresters in the finals, with runners-up Malyke Hines (149) and Caden Rogers (184) later adding at-large bids to the NCAA Championships. First-year Matty Lopes finished fourth at 133, while junior Carter Bailey (141) and sophomore Rylan Rogers (174) finished seventh at their respective weights.

In addition to its four individual champions and team championship, Lehigh picked up one major award at the EIWA Championships. Senior Michael Beard shared the Coaches' Trophy as the tournament's outstanding wrestler as voted on by the coaches with Binghamton's Brevin Casella. Beard went 3-0 to win his second consecutive title at 197, giving Lehigh the Coaches' Trophy winner for the second consecutive year. Ryan Crookham won the award in 2024 following his triumph at 133. Beard became the 22nd Lehigh wrestler to win the Coaches' Trophy and the third in the last six tournaments.

Owen Trephan joined the Mountain Hawks in late December as a graduate transfer for the spring semester to compete at heavyweight in place of injured EIWA Champion Nathan Taylor. Trephan came to Lehigh from NC State where he posted a 64-17 record over the last four seasons. He won his third consecutive conference title at the EIWA Tournament after winning back-to-back ACC titles at 285 in 2023 and 2024. He is now a three-time NCAA qualifier, going 3-4 over the last two seasons at the national tournament. Trephan made his official Lehigh debut on Jan. 11 and is 11-0 for the Mountain Hawks with eight bonus point wins. In the regular season finale, Trephan knocked off Arizona State's fifth-ranked Cohlton Schultz 4-2 to give Lehigh a 25-0 lead over the Sun Devils. Trephan is seeded fourth at the NCAA Championships.

Michael Beard's outstanding junior season featured a propensity for bonus point victories. Beard went 29-4 in 2023-24 with a school record-tying 27 bonus point wins, including 17 technical fall victories, which led Division I wrestling. He went 11-0 in dual competition last season, earning bonus points in 10 of those 11 victories. Beard captured his first EIWA title last season, winning at 197, and went on to earn his second career All-America medal (and first at Lehigh) with an eighth-place finish in Kansas City. This season, Beard is 20-1 and won his second consecutive EIWA title earlier this month. He also won titles at the Clarion Open and Journeymen Collegiate Classic. The No. 5 seed at 197, Beard has two falls, 12 technical falls and one major decision among his 20 victories.
Lehigh's contingent of NCAA qualifiers features three sixth-year wrestlers, a fifth-year junior, a third-year sophomore and one true first-year. Logan Rozynski won an EIWA title at 157 and became 11th true first-year in Pat Santoro's 17 seasons to qualify for the NCAA Championships.  Over the last 45 years, 11 Lehigh wrestlers have earned All-America honors in their first season of eligibility. Last year Luke Stanich finished fifth at 125 as a true first-year and Ryan Crookham placed third at 133 as a deferred first-year.

Caden Rogers will be the first Mountain Hawk on the mats Thursday as he will face No. 33 JT McDonnell of Oregon State in a pigtail match at 184.

Lehigh has the sixth most NCAA Champions (28) and the eighth most All-Americans (163) of all Division I wrestling programs. The Brown and White have never won the NCAA Team Championship, coming as close as second in 1939, third in 1965, 1979 and a tie for third in 2004. Lehigh last finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships in 2012 and last finished in the top five in 2004.
