WEST POINT, N.Y. - Lehigh women's basketball bounced back with a monster win, defeating Army 90-51 Sunday afternoon at Christl Arena. The Mountain Hawks improved to 12-4 (3-1 PL) and the Black Knights dropped to 11-3 (3-1 PL).Â
"Army is a really good team," said head coach Addie Micir. "They've played really well to start the year, and knowing the way we played against Colgate and we were playing at Army, we had to sharpen up, and we knew it. Our theme for the game was about us. And what we can do, and who we can be. I thought our team really locked into the game plan, I thought this was the best our defense was in terms of being in the right spots and being aggressive."
Fifth-year senior wing Maddie Albrecht was fantastic on Sunday, recording a season-high 24 points. Albrecht was effective, going 9-of-12 from the field. This was Albrecht's second straight 20-point game after recording 21 points on Jan. 8 against Colgate.Â
"Maddie makes it look easy, which is wild because she has such tough finishes, but she came back this year as a fifth-year and wanted to be challenged and stretched in a lot of ways, and not in a selfish way," Micir said. "Most importantly, she wants to win. To watch her be this unselfish and aggressive at the same time is awesome."
First-year forward Belle Bramer had a career-high 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field and sophomore forward Whitney Lind tallied a career-high 13 points after going 5-of-5 from the field. Meghan O'Brien also finished in double figures, finishing with 10 points.
Senior guard Ella Stemmer knocked down the game's opening points on a three-pointer 12 seconds into the game and the Mountain Hawks would hold onto the lead for the remainder of the contest. Lehigh started the game on an 11-0 run after knocking down three straight three-pointers and a layup.Â
Lehigh held a 23-13 lead at the end of the first quarter after going 9-of-14 from the field to open up the game. The Mountain Hawks continued to extend their lead after holding the Black Knights to just four points in the second quarter and one field goal. Lehigh led 41-17 at halftime.Â
Despite Army finding its rhythm a little in the second half, the Mountain Hawks continued to dominate the second half, outscoring Army 49-34 in the final 20 minutes.Â
The Mountain Hawks shot the lights out on Sunday, going 33-of-57 from the field (57.9%) which also marked a season-high field goal percentage. Lehigh had 21 assists on Sunday. Colleen McQuillen dished out a game-high of five assists and Jessie Ozzauto recorded four assists.Â
"Twenty-one assists on 33 made field goals is pretty awesome," Micir said. "We played light and with confidence, so I''m proud of the team."
Lehigh also shot 10-of-18 (55.6%) from long range. Junior forward Lily Fandre finished with eight points while also recording her 100th career three-pointer on Sunday.Â
Lehigh held Army to 18-of-55 shooting (32.7%) from the field. The Black Knights were also 5-of-20 (25.0%) from distance. Trinity Hardy and Fiona Hastick led the way for Army with nine points apiece.Â
Next up, Lehigh will host Boston University on Wednesday at 6 p.m. Wednesday's game will air on ESPN+.Â
