Lehigh Advances to Semifinal With 12-11 Win Over Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. - In a thrilling double overtime battle, No. 6 Lehigh punched its ticket to the Patriot League semifinals with a 12-11 win over No. 3 Army on Sunday.

Graduate student Emma Eberhardt scored on a feed from classmate Cassie Marte with 1:36 remaining in the second overtime to set off the Lehigh celebration. The Mountain Hawks will now face top seed Loyola in a semifinal Thursday at 3 p.m. in Baltimore.

Marte had a dominant performance for Lehigh with a career-tying four goals, while adding one assist and one caused turnover. Draw controls proved to be the deciding factor as Lehigh held a 17-10 advantage with Marte recording nine.

The Black Knights took an early 4-0 lead in the opening quarter. With 23 seconds remaining, Marte netted her first goal of the day to get the Mountain Hawks on the board. Lehigh maintained momentum as Gabby Schneider capitalized on a free position shot with seven seconds left as Army led 4-2 after one.

Lehigh continued its run, scoring two goals to open the second quarter tying the game at 4-4 with 12:34 remaining in the half. Marte and senior Olivia Memeger contributed goals in the run.

Army's Brigid Duffy broke up the run, giving Army a 5-4 lead at 9:27. Emma Eberhardt tied it again at 5-5 but Army rounded out the first half with two goals, taking a 7-5 lead at intermission.

The Mountain Hawks dominated the opening of the third quarter, going on a 3-0 run in the opening 10 minutes. Marte led the charge with two goals as an 8-7 advantage favored the Mountain Hawks.

Lehigh and Army traded two sets of goals, as Angelina Pino and Emma Fiore put the Mountain Hawks up 10-9 heading into the final quarter.

At 13:19, the Black Knights knotted the score at 10-10. The next goal of the contest remained in Army's favor as it held an 11-10 lead with 5:05 left in the fourth quarter.Â

Army earned possession off the draw controls as Emma Fiore picked up a two minute yellow card. The Black Knights' opening offensive opportunity was thwarted as first-year Brynn Freeman made a momentum-grabbing interception as the Mountain Hawks gained possession with 1:51 remaining.

Lehigh rode out the time on Fiore's penalty, before Schneider's final seconds shot attempt ran into a shot clock violation. With six seconds left Duffy tried to win it for Army but senior Hayley Hunt came up with the save.Â
