Lehigh Falls To Penn State 9-7 In Tight Battle

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women's lacrosse team was edged by Big Ten opponent Penn State 9-7 on Tuesday afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex. 
 
Senior goalkeeper Hayley Hunt had a strong performance in net, making 11 saves while picking up two ground balls and one caused turnover. Graduate student Emma Eberhardt led Lehigh offensively with a hat trick, while Gabby Schneider chipped in two goals and one assist with both of her goals coming in the final minutes.
 
Lehigh took an early 1-0 lead at 14:25 when Eberhardt cashed in on an assist from senior Olivia Memeger. The Nittany Lions captured the equalizer before Memeger netted a goal of her own, putting the Mountain Hawks up 2-1. 
 
Penn State responded with two goals before Eberhardt capitalized on her second goal of the game as it was knotted up 3-3 at the end of the first period.
 
The Nittany Lions scored the only two goals in the second period, leading 5-3 at intermission.
 
After Penn State claimed the first goal of the second half, Lehigh responded with two scores, decreasing the Nittany Lions' lead to 6-5. Graduate student Cassie Marte earned the first goal of the run and Eberhardt completed her hat trick as Lehigh sat within one after 45 minutes.
 
Penn State's Emma Kelly kicked off the fourth quarter with two goals, putting the Nittany Lions up 8-5 with 7:18 left in the contest. The veteran Schneider scored two quick goals to bring Lehigh within one but Kelly netted a final score for the Nittany Lions as they held on to secure the 9-7 win.
 
Senior Emma Fiore picked up five draw controls on the afternoon while seven Mountain Hawks earned one caused turnover apiece. First-year Camilla Madonna claimed one of the caused turnovers while leading Lehigh with three ground balls.
 
Lehigh (4-2) returns home on Saturday to play host to Georgetown. The game will be Youth Day and also the Morgan's Message game to bring awareness to mental health. Opening draw is set for noon.
