Lehigh Opens Season With Two Champs At Princeton Open; Two Others Win Titles At Clarion

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Lehigh wrestling team opened the 2024-25 season Sunday with a 21-wrestler contingent at the Princeton Open at Jadwin Gym. The Mountain Hawks came away with two individual champions, three finalists and a total of 10 wrestlers placing in the top six of their respective weight classes.
 
Senior Sheldon Seymour (125) and first-year Logan Rozynski (157) claimed individual titles to lead the Lehigh contingent.
 
In addition to the 21 wrestlers in action at Princeton, Lehigh sent four wrestlers to the Clarion Open. All four of Lehigh's Clarion Open entrants reached the finals with seniors Max Brignola and Michael Beard winning titles and sophomore Luke Stanich and junior Nathan Taylor finishing second. Brignola and Stanich competed unattached.
 
Lehigh had three of the top four finishers at 125 at the Princeton Open. Seymour's day begin with two bonus wins before defeating first-year teammates Mason Ziegler (5-2) and Matty Lopes (4-1, sv) in the semifinals and finals. The finals match was won with a takedown with 33 seconds remaining in the sudden victory period. Lopes debuted with two bonus wins and an 8-2 decision over Army's Charles Farmer to reach the finals. Ziegler also won his first two bouts before falling to Seymour in the semifinals. Ziegler fell 16-10 to Farmer in the third place bout.
 
Semifinal losers wrestled for third place so consolation bracket winners claimed fifth place at the Princeton Open.
 
Rozynski debuted with five wins, including four bonus-point victories. In the finals, Rozynski posted a 17-1 technical fall over Lock Haven's Nick Stampoulos in the finals. Deferred first-year Griffin Gonzalez finished third at 157, rebounding from a semifinal loss to Stampoulos to beat Army's Mark Metz for third.
 
Junior Carter Bailey led three entrants at 141 with a fifth-place finish. He bounced back from a quarterfinal loss with three consecutive consolation bracket victories. Senior Malyke Hines forfeited out of the tournament after an opening round win, while first-year Seamus Mack went 2-2.
 
Sophomore Kelvin Griffin and deferred first-year Matt Repos competed at 149. Griffin went 4-1 with four falls to finish in third place, while Repos went 2-2.
 
Lehigh had five entrants at 165, led by a sixth place finish by senior Thayne Lawrence, who rebounded from a quarterfinal loss to place top six. First-year Dom Federici won three bouts in his debut, while sophomore Owen Quinn and deferred first-years Zeke Dubler and Richie Grungo each won two bouts.
 
Sophomore Rylan Rogers debuted with a 5-1 showing and fifth place finish at 174. All of Rogers' victories were of the bonus point variety. He bounced back from a quarterfinal loss to post three consecutive wins. Also competing at 174 were junior Keegan Gagnon, sophomore Liam Gil-Swiger and deferred first-year Jared Schoppe.
 
At 197, junior JT Davis went 2-2 and claimed fourth place, winning his first two bouts and dropping his next two.
 
First-year heavyweight Calvin Lachman went 2-2 in his debut.
 
At the Clarion Open, Brignola, competing at 165, won his first three bouts by technical fall. In the finals against Michigan's Brock Mantanona, on the strength of a pair of second period takedowns.
 
Beard went 5-0 with a pin, two technical falls and a major decision. His only regular decision was a 7-5 win over Ohio State's Luke Geog in the finals, keyed by an early takedown, a third period reversal and riding time.
 
Stanich went 4-1 in his first action at 141. Opening with three bonus wins, Stanich then used riding time advantage in the tiebreakers to defeat Michigan's Sergio Lemley 2-2, tb. In the finals, Stanich ran into reigning NCAA Champion Jesse Mendez of Ohio State, who posted a 14-3 major decision.
 
Taylor opened his season with a 3-1 showing. He fell in the finals to No. 3 Nick Feldman of Ohio State 7-3 in a battle of top eight-ranked heavyweights.
 
The Mountain Hawks will next compete at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic, Sunday, Nov. 10 at nearby Freedom High School, with the annual round-robin event beginning at 9 a.m. The dual meet season begins Nov. 15 when Lehigh, ranked 16th in the NWCA's preseason top 25, welcomes EIWA newcomer Morgan State to Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall for a 7 p.m. match.
