Johnson Tabbed As Patriot League Rookie of the Week

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh first-year quarterback Hayden Johnson has been named Patriot League Rookie of the Week, the league announced Monday. Johnson made the most of his first career start Saturday, throwing for 204 yards and three touchdowns as Lehigh downed Colgate 45-17 for its fourth straight victory.
The Mountain Hawks have now won at least one weekly award following each of their four consecutive wins.
Johnson completed 16-of-21 passes on Saturday for 204 yards. He threw a seven-yard touchdown pass to junior Geoffrey Jamiel to give Lehigh a 17-3 halftime lead and threw two more scoring passes in the second half, as Lehigh eclipsed the 40-point mark for the third time this season.
The Lancaster, Pa., native set new career highs for passing yardage and touchdown passes.
For the season, Johnson is completing 68.5 percent of his passes for 915 yards with seven touchdowns. Johnson has also rushed 47 times for 203 yards and three touchdowns. He has seen significant time in all 10 games so far for the Brown and White this season.
In addition to Johnson's award, three Mountain Hawks received honorable mention recognition from the league Monday.
Jamiel had a big day offensively against the Raiders, hauling in seven passes for 125 yards and two touchdowns, his second 100-yard and two-touchdown game of the season. In addition to his seven-yard reception right before halftime, Jamiel took a screen pass 51-yards for a score to put Lehigh up 38-10 in the third quarter.
Junior defensive lineman Matt Spatny also picked up an honorable mention, after contributing four tackles and recording two more sacks to increase his league-leading total to 10. Both of Spatny's sacks came in the second quarter with the first coming on fourth down to give the Mountain Hawks the ball back on downs.
Kicker Nick Garrido was Lehigh's third honorable mention performer. The junior was 5-for-5 on extra points Saturday and booted a 37-yard field goal into the wind. Garrido has now made at least one field goal in Lehigh's last five games and is a perfect 6-for-6 during that span. He is also 14-for-14 on extra points during Lehigh's four-game winning streak.
Lehigh (7-3, 4-1 PL) controls its own destiny for the Patriot League title entering Saturday's Rivalry showdown with Lafayette. A win over the Leopards would give the Mountain Hawks their 13th Patriot League football title and the league's automatic berth to the FCS playoffs.
