No. 18 Lehigh Hosts Morgan State Friday in Dual Meet Opener

11/14/2024 1:10:00 PM | Men's Wrestling

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - After competing in tournaments the first two weekends, Lehigh opens its dual meet season as the Mountain Hawks welcome EIWA newcomer Morgan State to Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall Friday night on Youth Wrestling Night.

Lehigh had a pair of champions at the season-opening Princeton Open (Sheldon Seymour and Logan Rozynski) and added two more at the Clarion Open (Max Brignola and Michael Beard). Last weekend, Lehigh had 17 wrestlers competing at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic at Freedom High School, with Brignola, Beard and Luke Stanich winning Hammer Awards for A-bracket triumphs. Stanich and Brignola competed unattached. Morgan State dropped its first two duals last weekend to Glenville State and Bucknell.

The Lehigh wrestling team had 17 wrestlers in action Nov. 10 at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic at nearby Freedom High School. The Mountain Hawks had three wrestlers win Hammer Awards for winning "A" brackets at the round robin event. Three other Lehigh wrestlers went undefeated to win at lower flight brackets. Lehigh's three hammer awards were won by sophomore Luke Stanich (141) and seniors Max Brignola (165) and Michael Beard (197). Stanich and Brignola were both competing unattached at the event. Deferred first-years Griffin Gonzalez (157E) and Zeke Dubler (165F) and junior Jack Wilt (184D) all went undefeated to win their respective brackets.

The Mountain Hawks return a solid core of established veterans in 2024-25. Lehigh's upperclass group includes a trio of returning All-Americans in Luke Stanich, Ryan Crookham and Michael Beard; five returning EIWA champions (the three All-Americans, plus senior Malyke Hines and junior Nathan Taylor); seven previous NCAA qualifiers and a total of 11 wrestlers who have represented the Brown and White at the EIWA Championships.

With 22 wrestlers listed as probable starters, as many as nine Mountain Hawks could make their Lehigh dual meet debuts if they take the mat against Morgan State. The group includes deferred first-years Griffin Gonzalez (157), Zeke Dubler (165), Richie Grungo (165) and Jared Schoppe (174) as well as true first-years Matty Lopes (125), Mason Ziegler (125), Logan Rozynski (157), Jadon Skellenger (157) and Calvin Lachman (285). Sophomore Rylan Rogers could make his Lehigh dual debut after wrestling in four duals during his time at Michigan.

Lehigh kicks off its 116th dual meet season on Friday. The Mountain Hawks are 11-5 in dual meet openers under Pat Santoro. Lehigh has only won one of its last four dual meet openers, a 20-13 win over Oregon State at Stabler Arena in November 2022. The Mountain Hawks dropped last year's dual opener to Pitt.

Seven Lehigh wrestlers appear in the latest rankings from InterMat, while six are ranked by FloWrestling and eight appear in the WrestleStat top 33. Four Mountain Hawks are ranked by both Amateur Wrestling News and The Open Mat. Three Lehigh wrestlers are ranked across all three outlets, led by sophomore Ryan Crookham, who is the consensus No. 1 at 133. Senior Michael Beard and junior Nathan Taylor are also ranked in the top 10. InterMat, FloWrestling and WrestleStat rank from 1-33, while AWN and The Open Mat rank 1-20.

The return of the Morgan State wrestling program was announced in October 2021, following a 24-year hiatus. The Bears are in their second season back on the mats. So far this season, Morgan State has sent wrestlers to the Southeast Open and last weekend was the Bears' dual opener where they fell to Glenville State and Bucknell. Treshaun Tecson (125) and Xavier Doolin (285) both went 2-0 on the day with Tecson earning a major decision against Bucknell and Doolin winning by fall against Glenville State and by major against the Bison. Darrien Roberts also posted a win at 174 against Glenville State. Morgan State is coached by National Wrestling Hall of Fame member Kenny Monday, who was a three-time Olympian and the first black wrestler to win an Olympic gold medal.

Friday's dual marks just the third-ever meeting between Lehigh and Morgan State in wrestling. The previous two duals were at the Wolverine Quad in Ann Arbor, Mich., in January 1993 and January 1995. The Morgan State wrestling program was brought back after a dormant period prior to the 2023-24 season. The Bears were announced as the 12th members of the EIWA in September.

Friday's dual begins at 7 p.m. from Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. Tickets can be purchased at LehighTickets.com or by calling 610-758-4263 during business hours.

Lehigh will wrestle its first road dual of the season next weekend when the Mountain Hawks visit Pitt. Head coach Pat Santoro returns to his alma mater as the Mountain Hawks look to bounce back after losing the last two duals in one of their most-contested series. The match is set for 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 24 from Fitzgerald Field House in Pittsburgh.
