PHILADELPHIA – Lehigh men's tennis traveled south this past weekend for ITA Regionals at the University of Pennsylvania. Five singles competitors and three doubles teams played in Philadelphia from Thursday to Saturday.
"We had a great opportunity against really tough regional competition this weekend, but I feel that we didn't perform near our peak level" said Howard Talmud '77 head coach Craig Schwartz. "We need to continue working hard and doing the little things on the court to improve our decision making. We will continue to train hard throughout the rest of the semester and be ready to roll come spring."
ITA Regionals began for Lehigh on Thursday morning in the singles qualifying draw, which had four Mountain Hawks competing. First-year Ofer Hacohen battled Hofstra's Maxim Michaels in the round of 64, falling in two sets. Junior Wyeth Anzilotti battled to a third set against Armando Sotelo of St. John's, but lost 7-5 in the third. First-year Jose Murariu dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision to Bucknell's Adamantios Stavrakas, leaving senior Sean Jaeger as the lone Mountain Hawk still alive in the qualifying draw. Jaeger won his first match in three sets over Hofstra's Kaita Odani but lost in the round of 32 later that afternoon.
Hacohen and Murariu each competed in a qualifying consolation match later on Thursday. Hacohen defeated Lukas Cabue of Mercyhurst 6-3, 6-2 while Murariu earned a 6-3, 6-3 win over Villanova's William Monahan.
The lone Mountain Hawk in the main draw was senior Marc Blekhman, who battled Princeton's Ellis Short in the first round on Friday. Blekhman fell in two sets 6-1, 6-2.
Doubles competition also kicked off on Friday, starting with the team of Anzilotti and junior Jackson Morash. The pair battled a team from Drexel to a tiebreak, but ultimately lost 8-7 (9-7). Blekhman and Jaeger picked up a solid 8-4 win over Hofstra to advance to the next round of doubles competition while the team of Murariu/Hacohen lost 8-2 to a different team from Drexel.
Blekhman/Jaeger faced off against a doubles team from Delaware in the second round on Saturday, dropping an 8-5 decision to conclude the weekend for Lehigh.
The Mountain Hawks will conclude their fall campaign next weekend at the ITA Conference Masters Event on October 25-27 hosted by Army West Point. One doubles pairing and two singles players from Lehigh will compete against each school in the Patriot League for a chance to play at the ITA Conference Masters Championships in San Diego from November 7-10.
