Kingson's Penalty Kick Leads Mountain Hawks to Victory

9/19/2023 8:54:00 PM | Men's Soccer

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh men's soccer team came out with a hard-fought victory against Sacred Heart, defeating the Pioneers 2-1 Tuesday night at the Ulrich Sports Complex.

The Mountain Hawks jumped to 1-4-2, and Sacred Heart fell to 3-5.

"Those two goals really helped us", Koski said. "When you score two goals, you have a shot. Sacred Heart is a good team. They put a lot of pressure on us in the last 10 minutes. I'm happy for the guys. To get that first win is always hard to do."

Thomas Robertson scored with just 10 minutes into the game, which marked the fastest goal the Mountain Hawks have scored all season. Beckett Wenger was credited with the assist on Robertson's goal.

Sacred Heart's Oliver Persson netted the equalizer in the 29th minute after Blake Koski stopped a shot by David Garcia Gallego, but Koski wasn't able to grab the rebound, and Persson was right there for the goal.

Lehigh and Sacred Heart were tied at one heading into halftime.

The second half started out slow, with very few chances between both team's until Robertson was fouled inside of the box in the 65th minute. Perry Kingson was called to take the penalty kick, and Kingson converted. That marked the second penalty kick that Kingson converted this season.

"I'm happy for Tommy, that was a good goal for Tommy, and it was a good finish by Perry on the penalty kick," Koski said.

Just 10 minutes later, the Pioneers had a chance of their own after Beckett Wenger was given a yellow card after he fouled a Sacred Heart player in the box. Persson took the penalty kick for the Pioneers, but Blake Koski saved it.

Sacred Heart had two more opportunities with two  minutes remaining to find the equalizer, but Koski had two more saves.

Koski finished Tuesday's game with seven saves. Andrew Hammersley had two saves for Sacred Heart.

'I think it was a game where sometimes you have to fight it out," Koski said. "We did that tonight, and it's an important step. I think there's a lot of things we can improve on, and I think our guys would say that too, but our defense did a really nice job. I thought when Sam came out, Matthew Aitchison stepping in did a really good job under really stressful situations, and I thought he really helped.. Some guys had some good performances. We moved Yusef Gueye up top, and I thought he did a really nice job at stretching the backs."

The Pioneers outshot Lehigh 12-10. Kingson led the Mountain Hawks with four shots.

The Mountain Hawks will host Lafayette on Saturday at 6 p.m. in The Rivalry, presented by Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute.
