Mountain Hawks Set to Host Delaware State in Non-League Action

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball program (12-17, 1-7 Patriot League) welcomes Delaware State (6-19, 2-10 NEC) to J. David Walker Field at Legacy Park for Tuesday's consolation game of the Liberty Bell Classic. The game is slated for 3 p.m.
The Mountain Hawks are looking to get back on track this week after going 1-4 this past week, falling to Villanova (9-7) in the opening round of the Liberty Bell Classic and then coming away with one win in a four-game series against rival Lafayette. Lehigh held at least a three-run lead in the first and second games before falling 8-6 in game one and 11-6 in game two. The Brown and White managed to come away with a 10-7 win in game three, which was suspended due to weather and picked back up Sunday for the final three outs and then were shut out 4-0 to conclude the series.
First-year Dom Patrizi led Lehigh at the plate, going 7-for-15 for a batting average of .467, with three RBIs, five runs scored, two walks and stole two bases. Junior Tyler Young recorded six hits last week to go with two doubles, four RBIs and two runs scored while sophomore Rafe Perich, fifth-year Casey Rother and sophomore Jake Whitlinger each had five hits. Rother plated seven RBIs and scored five runs including a home run and a double while reaching 200 career hits against Villanova. Perich also had a home run and a double with three RBIs and Whitlinger scored two runs, drove in two and hit three doubles.
Lehigh used 18 pitchers last week with senior Ryan Deom making three appearances and did not allow a run in 4.1 innings pitched with six strikeouts. Rother made one start for two innings and allowed just one hit and two walks while sophomore Najir Glenn and first-year Ryan Mullock also recorded scoreless outings.
Four Mountain Hawks are hitting over .300, led by Young's .330 batting average. Sophomore Andrew Kohl is close behind with a .327 batting average and is tied with Rother for home runs this season with seven. Perich leads the squad with 39 hits with 26 RBIs and nine doubles while hitting .320. Rother is the team leader with 35 RBIs and 12 doubles this season to go with his seven home runs and .316 batting average. Patrizi, who has been in the starting lineup all five games last week, is producing a .417 batting average and has eight RBIs on 15 hits with 11 runs scored and sophomore Justin Butler is hitting at a clip of .438 with three homers and seven hits. Junior Andrew Nole has 22 hits and 11 RBIs with 12 runs scored for a .349 batting average.
Fifth-year pitcher Luke Rettig has thrown 28.1 innings this season and has a 4-2 record in seven starts with an ERA of 2.54 and 37 strikeouts this season. He sits second all-time with 244 career strikeouts, now just 22 away from moving into first in program history. Sophomore Alex Bouchard has also thrown over 24 innings, with 24 strikeouts in seven starts and eight appearances while junior Teddy Tolliver has thrown 22 innings with 21 strikeouts in six starts and seven appearances. First-year Shane O'Neill and senior Will Grisack have both tossed over 19 innings and made over 12 appearances on the mound. Deom has now made 10 appearances in relief in 16 innings of work with 14 strikeouts.
Delaware State (6-19, 2-10 NEC) enters the game on a four-game losing streak after being swept by Fairleigh Dickinson on the road in Teaneck, N.J. The Hornets fell to Rider in the opening round of the Liberty Bell Classic, 5-1, after taking a 1-0 lead in the fifth, the Broncs went ahead for good in the bottom of the fifth en route to a 5-1 victory. In the NEC series against FDU, the Hornets were outscored 57-14 in the three-game series falling 26-8, 23-5 and 8-1. Delaware State held leads in games one and three but the Hornets were unable to keep the Knights off the scoreboard.
Four Hornets are hitting over .300 with two student-athletes with a batting average over .350. Trey Paige leads the squad with a .394 batting average, 41 hits, 29 runs scored, 19 RBIs, seven doubles and two triples with five home runs. Krew Bouldin is also hitting over .350, with a .355 batting average with 33 hits, four doubles and a home run with 12 RBIs and 17 runs scored. Evan Bouldin and Wilfredo Mendez are the other two Hornets hitting above .300. Evan Bouldin has 16 RBIs with 25 hits, four doubles and two homers while Mendez has scored 16 rims on 29 hits, four doubles, two triples and two home runs for 19 RBIs.
Delaware State has three pitchers who have recorded 20 or more innings on the mound, led by Nathan Vidmar who has made seven starts for 33.2 innings with an 0-3 record. He has 18 strikeouts on the season with 19 walks and an ERA of 7.22. Peter Carreca has also made seven starts this season, throwing 31 innings of work with 14 Ks and an 0-5 record with an ERA over 10. Evan Harris leads the Hornets with 26 strikeouts this year in seven appearances with six starts. Harris has thrown 22.1 innings with 22 walks and an 0-2 record with an 11.69 ERA.

Last season was the first time the teams faced off since 2013, with Delaware State claiming the three-game series 2-1 last March. Lehigh dropped game one (1-0) and game two (8-5) before earning a 7-3 victory in the series finale.
The Mountain Hawks will hit the road for the first time since March 26, heading to Army West Point for a three-game series in Patriot League action Saturday and Sunday, April 8-9. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 12 p.m. with game two of the twin bill set for 3:30 p.m. The lone game on Sunday will start at 1 p.m. All three games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
