Big First Half, Solid Finish Push Lehigh Past Wagner, 14-11

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Lehigh women's lacrosse team scored nine of the game's first 10 goals but then had to withstand a Wagner third quarter charge Saturday at Hameline Field. The Seahawks battled back within a goal with just under 11 minutes to play, but the Mountain Hawks scored three of the game's final four goals to earn their fifth straight victory, 14-11.
Senior Cassie Marte set career highs with four goals and five points, while classmate Katia Carnevale added four goals.
With five straight victories, Lehigh is now 5-1 on the season.
Lehigh scored the first four goals of the game and led 4-1 after the first quarter. The Mountain Hawks opened the second quarter on a 5-0 run to take a 9-1 lead with 3:44 left before halftime. Of Lehigh's first nine goals, Marte and junior Olivia Memeger both scored three, Carnevale scored two and first-year Riley Ellis netted her first of the season. Junior Emma Fiore added a goal right before halftime to give Lehigh a 10-3 lead at the break.
Wagner (1-4) came out hot in the second half, scoring seven of the first eight goals, as Nia Scott scored her second of the game to pull within 11-10 of Lehigh with 10:53 to play. Carnevale and sophomore Casey O'Connor scored to provide some cushion for the Mountain Hawks, while Marte scored her fourth of the day to close out the scoring with 1:28 remaining.
Marte and Memeger led Lehigh with five total points. Senior Gabby Schneider led the Mountain Hawks with three assists. Her assist on Marte's second goal was the 100th of her career.
Lehigh held a 33-18 advantage in shots and a 16-13 edge in draw controls. Marte and senior Emma Eberhardt both had five draw controls. The Mountain Hawks caused 12 of Wagner's 19 turnovers, with Eberhardt leading the way with three caused turnovers.
Kendra Hall and Megan Greco both had three goals to lead the Seahawks.
Junior Hayley Hunt was credited with three saves, while Lauren DiStefano of Wagner was credited with eight.
The Mountain Hawks will continue their road swing next Saturday when they open Patriot League play at rival Lafayette. Opening draw is set for 12:30 p.m. with broadcast coverage on ESPN+.
