Mountain Hawks Suffer a Pair of Losses to Bucknell in Patriot League Action

3/26/2023 7:14:00 PM | Baseball

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball team (11-13, 0-4 PL) lost both games to Bucknell (12-11, 6-2 PL) in a couple of seven-inning games held at Depew Field on Sunday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks held leads of three or more runs in both games but dropped game one 5-3 and game two 16-6.

Game 1 – L, 6-4
After the Mountain Hawks and Bison played three scoreless innings, Lehigh would get two runs across the plate with a RBI double by junior Andrew Nole that scored fifth-year Gerard Sweeney. Sophomore Andrew Kohl followed that with an RBI double of his own that plated Nole to give Lehigh a 2-0 lead after four innings.

Sophomore Rafe Perich singled into right field to bring first-year Ryan Cochran trotting home and extended the Mountain Hawks lead to 3-0. The Bison countered in the bottom half of the fifth inning to tie the game at 3-3 with an RBI single to center field by Kyle Lyon, an RBI for Jacob Corson after he was hit by a pitch and an RBI for Grant Voytovich on a fielder's choice.

Perich put Lehigh back in front with an RBI double down the left-field line that scored Cochran again, as the Mountain Hawks led 4-3 and three outs from earning their first Patriot League victory of the season. Bucknell walked it off with a three-run home run to right field by Sean Keys and claimed game one of the day, 6-4.

Perich went 3-for-4 on the afternoon with a couple of RBIs and a double while Nole and Kohl each produced two hits with a double and one RBI apiece. Cochran scored twice, recorded a stolen base and had one hit.

Sophomore right-hander Alex Bouchard made the start and threw for four innings and gave up three earned runs on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Senior right-handed pitcher Ryan Deom was the first to enter in relief and did not give up a run or a hit with a walk and a strikeout before first-year right-hander Cole Leaman entered the game. Leaman threw 1.1 innings of work with one earned run on one hit and a walk. Fifth-year Casey Rother (L, 0-2) recorded one out in the bottom of the seventh before giving up the game-winning home run for his second loss of the season.

Game 2 – L, 16-6
The Mountain Hawks wasted no time in getting runs on the board in game two, taking a 4-0 lead after half an inning after Sweeney hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Perich for a 1-0 advantage. Junior Tyler Young plated two runners with a single up the middle and first-year Dom Patrizi singled to right field to give Lehigh a 4-0 lead.

Bucknell cut the deficit down to one after a two-RBI triple by Tyler Dunn and Billy Kender reached on a fielder's choice bringing the Bison with a run, 4-3 to finish the first inning. The Mountain Hawks made it 5-3 in the second when Sweeney singled to center to score Rother and gave Lehigh a two-run advantage after the top half of the second.

The Bison started their half of the second frame with a bases-clearing double by Keys to put Bucknell in front 6-5 and turned that into an eight-run inning, leading Lehigh 11-5 just after two innings.
Lehigh would score their final run of the game in the third inning when sophomore Jake Whitlinger reached on a fielder's choice to score Young and cut the deficit to 11-6 after the third. Bucknell tacked on five more runs and ended the game in the bottom of the seventh when they went ahead by 10 runs off a Kender RBI triple and swept the doubleheader against Lehigh at Depew Field.

Five pitchers appeared on the mound in game two with senior right-hander Ben Christian getting the start. Christian tossed 1.2 innings and allowed six earned runs on four hits with a strikeout and a walk. Junior right-handed pitcher Tyler Thompson faced five batters and allowed five runs, only one of them earned, on four hits before sophomore right-hander Val Taddei came in relief and threw 2.1 innings of work with three strikeouts and gave up four runs on two hits and four walks. Sophomore left-hander Najir Glenn tossed two innings and only allowed one run and a hit with two walks and a strikeout before classmate Marcus Danchision entered and recorded a strikeout and one hit.

The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Tuesday, March 28 when they take on Villanova in first round of the Liberty Bell Classic at J. David Walker Field at Legacy Park. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
