Lehigh Drops the Series Opener with The Citadel

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Lehigh baseball squad (1-3) trailed 5-0 before fighting back within two runs, 6-4, in the eighth inning. A five-run eighth inning from The Citadel (4-1) secured an 11-4 win over the Mountain Hawks in the first meeting between the two programs at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park on Friday afternoon.

After Lehigh was retired in order, sophomore right-handed pitcher Alex Bouchard got the nod and recorded the first two outs before a throwing error kept the inning alive. Bouchard walked three batters, which scored two Bulldog, ending his outing and sophomore Marcus Danchision entered in relief.

The Bulldogs added three more runs in the second frame to extend their lead to 5-0 as Lehigh made another pitching change, bringing in another sophomore right-hander Jack Hamilton. The Mountain Hawks got their first run across the plate on a solo home run off the bat of sophomore right fielder Andrew Kohl for his second homer of the season. Lehigh would trail The Citadel 5-1 after three innings.

After a scoreless fourth inning, the Bulldogs tacked on another run to push their advantage back to five runs, 6-1 through five innings of the series opener.

The seventh got started with a single up the middle by fifth-year left fielder Gerard Sweeney, followed by a fielder's choice for fifth-year designated hitter Joe Gorla, who stood on first. Junior catcher Andrew Nole singled into left field to put runners on first and second. After junior shortstop Tyler Young advanced the runners up a base, Kohl drove in two RBIs with a double to left-center field to cut the deficit in half, 6-3 after seven innings.

The Mountain Hawks cut The Citadel's lead to just two runs in the top half of the eighth inning, 6-4, after Sweeney doubled to right-center field to score fifth-year first baseman Casey Rother from first base. The Bulldogs put together a five-run bottom of the eighth to stretch their lead to seven runs and defeated Lehigh 11-4.

Bouchard (0-1) threw for 0.2 innings with two earned runs on one hit, four walks and one strikeout and earned the loss in the decision. Danchision tossed one inning and allowed three runs, two of them earned, on two hits and three walks before he was relieved by sophomore Jack Hamilton. He hurled 3.1 innings and allowed just one earned run on two hits, three strikeouts and one walk.

First-year Shane O'Neill threw a scoreless 1.1 innings of work with two hits and a walk followed by classmate Cole Leaman, who tossed one inning and gave up four earned runs on four hits. Another first-year in David Andolina stepped on the mound and gave up one earned run on one hit in the two batters he faced before junior Lucas Rich relieve him and threw 0.2 of an inning and did not allow a hit or a run with one walk.
Four Mountain Hawks recorded base hits in the game led by Kohl's 3-for-4 performance at the plate. Kohl hit his second home run of the season, along with a double for three RBIs while Sweeney and Nole both produced two hits in the game. Sweeney went 2-for-4 with an RBI double while Nole had a double and scored a run for the Brown and White, going 2-for-3.

Sophomore third baseman Rafe Perich recorded the other Lehigh hit while Gorla and Rother both crossed the plate for runs scored in the loss. Rother's hit streak ends at 23 consecutive games.
The Mountain Hawks return to Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park Saturday for game two of the three-game series with the Bulldogs. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. with the left-handed fifth-year Luke Rettig to get the start.
