Mountain Hawks Head to The Citadel for First Meeting in Program History

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball squad is back on the road this weekend for a three-game series against The Citadel at Joseph P. Riley, Jr, Park in Charleston, S.C.
The Mountain Hawks (1-2) are looking to build off of what they started in Daytona Beach, Fla., where they won the season opener 5-3, but dropped game two in extra innings, 7-6 in 10 innings, and game three in a walk-off by Bethune-Cookman 4-3. Sophomore outfielder Andrew Kohl finished the weekend going 4-for-13 with a home run, a triple, three RBIs and two runs scored while fifth-year Joe Gorla also produced four hits, going 4-for-11 for a .364 batting average, with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Fifth-years Casey Rother and Gerard Sweeney both produced three hits during the series. All of Rother's hits were for extra bases, with two solo home runs and a double. He extends his hit streak to 23 games and is now tied for fourth in career home runs with 19. Sweeney finished the weekend going 3-for-13 with two RBIs and scored once.
Thirteen different Mountain Hawks made appearances on the mound against the Wildcats, with Rother, sophomore right-hander Marcus Danchision and junior right-hander Teddy Tolliver each throwing for three-plus innings. Rother, this week's Patriot League Pitcher of the Week, threw three innings and struck out five without allowing a hit to record the save. Danchision tossed 3.2 innings with just one hit and one unearned run while Tolliver hurled three innings in relief with three strikeouts and three hits and did not allow a run.
The starting rotation of sophomore right-hander Alex Bouchard, fifth-year southpaw Luke Rettig and sophomore right-hander Val Taddei combined for seven innings pitched throughout the weekend series. Bouchard, who got the start on opening night, threw 2.1 innings of work with three strikeouts and allowed three hits and an unearned run. Rettig got the start in game two and tossed two innings with four K's, two earned runs, and a hit with four walks while Taddei recorded six strikeouts and allowed two earned runs on four hits and two walks.
The Citadel (3-1) opened its season with a three-game series sweep of Delaware State, 21-9 in game one, 5-4 in game two, and a game three victory by a score of 11-10. The Bulldogs were then handed their first loss this past Wednesday when they fell to Charleston Southern, 4-1.
Six Bulldogs have a .300 batting average or better, but two of them are hitting .450 and higher. Senior catcher Travis Lott has produced at the plate, going 7-for-13 at the plate to lead The Citadel with a .538 batting average, with two doubles, a home run, four RBIs and three runs scored. Graduate student infielder Dylan Costa is one of three Bulldogs with five hits this season, going 5-for-11 at the plate with seven runs scored, a double and one RBI while sophomore outfielder Wells Sykes is hitting .385 with three doubles, five RBIs and five runs scored. Sophomore infielder Thomas Rollauer leads the Bulldogs with seven RBIs and has six hits, a homer and a double.
On the mound, The Citadel had 14 different pitchers toe the rubber through four games. Sophomore left-hander Will Holmes threw five innings in two appearances and one start, with five strikeouts, four hits and two earned runs. Four Bulldog pitchers have thrown at least four innings, with graduate student right-hander Cameron Reeves making a start and tossing four innings with nine strikeouts, three earned runs on three hits and four walks. Right-handed junior Ben Hutchins threw 4.2 innings of work and fanned five batters with three runs allowed, two earned, on five hits while junior right-hander appeared in two games and threw 4.1 innings with six K's and three hits without allowing a run.
The series will open on Friday afternoon and Bouchard will get the start for the Mountain Hawks with first pitch being set for 3 p.m. Saturday's game is scheduled for 2 p.m. and the final game of the series will start at 11 a.m. on Sunday. All three games will be streamed on ESPN+.
