DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Lehigh baseball squad (1-2) battled back from a 2-0 deficit to score three runs, including taking its only lead in the top of the ninth, before Bethune-Cookman (2-1) scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the Mountain Hawks 4-3 in their final game at Jackie Robinson Ballpark on Sunday morning.
The Wildcats and Mountain Hawks were scoreless through two and a half innings before Bethune-Cookman scored twice with two outs in the bottom of the third. Hylan Hall hit an RBI single followed by Robert Moya doubling to right-center field to plate a run, as the Wildcats led 2-0 after three innings.
Fifth-year Casey Rother blasted his second home run of the season on a solo shot to left-center field to cut the lead in half, 2-1, after the sixth. An inning later, junior Riley Davis was hit by a pitch with two outs. Fifth-year Joe Gorla earned a pinch-hit single to center field to move Davis to second base. Junior Tyler Young then singled to left field that allowed Davis to race home from second base to tie the game at 2-2 in the seventh.
After a scoreless eighth, the Mountain Hawks would take their first lead of the game when Gorla reached on a throwing error by the Wildcat shortstop, allowing him to advance to second base and Andrew Nole trotted home to give Lehigh a 3-2 advantage. In the bottom of the ninth, a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt allowed the B-CU runner to score from second to tie the game at 3-3. Colton Olasin ended it with a single up to the middle to score the game-winner for Bethune-Cookman.
Six different pitchers took the mound for Lehigh with sophomore Val Taddei getting the start. Taddei threw for 2.2 innings allowing two earned runs on four hits and striking out six Wildcats. First-year Shane O'Neill tossed 1.1 with two strikeouts and allowed one hit. Junior Teddy Tolliver was next in for Lehigh and recorded three strikeouts and three hits in his three innings on the bump.
Senior Ryan Deom did not allow a hit in his inning of work. Sophomore Rafe Perich faced two batters in the top of the ninth before he was replaced by senior Will Grisack who faced two batters as well and allowed just one hit. Perich (0-1) is dealt with the loss in the decision.
Lehigh tallied six hits in the game, coming from six different Mountain Hawks. Rother's hit extended his hit streak to 23 games, dating back to last season, with his second home run of the season and the 19th of his career. Young also had an RBI with his lone hit while sophomore Sam Holtz recorded a double for his lone base hit.
Next, the Mountain Hawks will travel to Charleston, S.C. for a three-game series with The Citadel Feb. 24-26. Friday's game is slated for 3 p.m.
