BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women's basketball team won its third straight game and rolled to a 66-49 victory over American on Saturday in its Pink Out Game, which was presented by Lehigh Valley Topper Cancer Institute. With the win, Lehigh captured the series sweep over the Eagles.
"This was awesome today, " said head coach Addie Micir. "I thought we did a good job of jumping out on them early, and when shots weren't falling in the second half, we needed to get stops, and we got them, which was really important."
Before the game, Lehigh also honored Mackenzie Kramer and Frannie Hottinger for recording their 1,00th career points. Kramer did it against Navy on Feb. 15, and Hottinger did it against Loyola on Feb. 11th.
"How lucky am I to have those two on the court," Micir said."They do such a good job at balancing each other out. They score in different ways, so I was pumped that I got to celebrate them."
Lehigh improved to 14-12 (10-5 PL), and American is 6-20 (5-10 PL). Lehigh sits in third place in the league standings with three Patriot League regular season games remaining.
Four Mountain Hawks finished in double figures. Jamie Behar had a career-high of 17 points, Hottinger scored 17, Mackenzie Kramer had 14, and Anna Harvey tied her career-high of 13 points.
American took an early 10-4 lead at the first media timeout, but that would be the Eagles biggest lead of the game. Ivy Bales put American up 14-9 with 3:37 remaining in the first quarter, and the Mountain Hawks held American scoreless for the remainder of the quarter, taking a 20-14 lead after one.
Lehigh continued to put its foot off the gas in the second quarter. The Mountain Hawks shot 50% from the field, led by Harvey's three-point-shooting. Harvey was 3-of-3 from beyond the arc in the first half.
Hottinger scored a layup with 1:36 left in the first half to put Lehigh up by 19, which was the biggest lead of the day for the Mountain Hawks. American went on a 6-0 run to end the half, but Lehigh still led 44-31 at halftime.
American and Lehigh both scored 14 points in the third quarter, but the Mountain Hawks would win the fourth quarter to hold onto their third straight win. Lehigh's defense stepped up big, holding the Eagles to just four points in the fourth quarter. American was 2-of-15 from the field in the final 10 minutes.
'We need it," Micir said. "We need it when shots aren't falling."
Kayla Henning had a team-high of 14 points for American.
The Mountain Hawks forced 17 turnovers from the Eagles on Saturday and had a 44-39 advantage on the glass.
"This was a big win for us," Harvey said."I haven't checked any of the scores from today, but we knew we needed to win, and we knew we needed to do it on the defensive end."
Lehigh will head to Lewisburg, Pa., on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. game against Bucknell.
