LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Lehigh women's basketball team captured its first series sweep against Bucknell since 2011 on Wednesday night at Sojka Pavilion with an 84-72 win over the Bison.
"We said to the team after the third quarter, hey, they're a good team, and good teams go on runs," said head coach Addie Micir. "But, we're a good team too, and it's our turn to go on a run. I thought we did a really nice job of settling down and just running our stuff."
Lehigh has won four straight games to improve to 15-12 (11-5), and Bucknell is 12-15 (8-8). With the win Lehigh has clinched a home quarterfinal game in the upcoming Patriot League Tournament on Monday, March 6. Tickets can be purchased here.
The milestones didn't stop there. Senior Frannie Hottinger set a record for most points in a season, eclipsing the mark of 549 set by Jessica DePalo in the 2003-04 season. Hottinger reached the milestone in the first half and finished with 18 points to sit at 560 for the season.
Mackenzie Kramer tied her career-high of 31 points while Lily Fandre added 16 for the Mountain Hawks.
"We needed a lot of different people to step up," Micir said ."Those three when it mattered most showed that. I can't say enough about Kenz down the stretch - just making sure her feet were set, and her shots were good, and she was so confident, and Frannie did the Frannie thing the whole way… Lily just plays. She had two big threes to start the game, and they were going to dare her to shoot it a little bit."
Lehigh had a strong lead throughout the game. They led for 32:37, while Bucknell led for 4:43.
Lehigh won both the first quarter and the second quarter. Despite Bucknell shooting 50% in the first half, Lehigh's three-point shooting helped propel the Mountain Hawks to a first-half lead. The Mountain Hawks hit six three-pointers in the first half, while the Bison only hit three.
Early foul trouble for Bucknell also helped put Lehigh in front early on. Bucknell's Emma Shaffer went to the bench in the second quarter after getting two early fouls. Shaffer finished with 14 points.
Remi Sisselman converted one of Bucknell's three first-half three-pointers with 48 seconds left in the game to cut Lehigh's lead to 43-34 at the half.
The third quarter is when Bucknell started to take over. The Bison outscored Lehigh 27-11. Bucknell secured its first lead of the game since early in the first quarter off of a Shaffer layup with 1:34 to go. At the end of the third quarter, the Bison had a five-point advantage.
Lehigh started the fourth quarter on a 5-0 run and ended up outscoring Bucknell 28-11 in the period. Lehigh was 5-of-7 from beyond the arc in the fourth quarter. Kramer scored 13 of her 31 points in the final 10 minutes.
Cecelia Collins led Bucknell on Wednesday with 31 points.
Lehigh took care of the basketball on Wednesday and shot the ball well. The Mountain Hawks only turned the ball over four times, and forced 12 turnovers from Bucknell. Lehigh ended the game 26-of-61 from the field (42.6%), and Bucknell was 25-of-55 from the field (47.3%).
The Mountain Hawks will host Boston University on Saturday at 4 p.m., which will also be Lehigh's senior day.
"We still have two really big games to play, and something tells me that Anna and Frannie wouldn't have it any other way to have a game on senior night mean something, so we're really excited about it."
