
Mountain Hawks Top Saint Joseph's in Thrilling 10-9 Overtime Victory

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Trailing 9-7 with 13 minutes remaining in regulation, the Lehigh women's lacrosse team responded with a 3-0 run to top Saint Joseph's 10-9 in overtime on Wednesday afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Senior Katia Carnevale tallied her second consecutive hat trick, scoring the game winner just over two minutes into overtime.
Olivia Memeger continued to have an impressive start to her junior season, ending Wednesday's game with a team-high six points. Memeger tallied three assists, including the helper on Carneval's game-winner, and three goals against the Hawks to record her second straight hat trick. Seniors Gabby Schneider and Emma Eberhardt both added two goals for Lehigh (1-1).Â
Carnevale and fellow senior Cassie Marte both finished with a team-high two caused turnovers. Marte also tallied a team-high three ground balls and added five draw controls against the Hawks. Junior Emma Fiore led the Mountain Hawks with six draw controls.Â
The first quarter was a defensive battle with both sides refusing to let the first goal of the game in the back of their nets. The Lehigh offense ultimately won the battle, with Schneider scoring the first goal of the game with four minutes left in the first quarter. With a minute left, Eberhardt scored her first goal of the game to give the Mountain Hawks the 2-0 lead.Â
Saint Joseph's showed no signs of backing down as the Hawks outscored Lehigh 3-2 in the second quarter. Trailing 4-3 at halftime, Saint Joseph's entered the third quarter with intensity, going on a 4-0 run in the first six minutes of the second half.Â
With less than eight minutes left in the third quarter, Memeger ended the Hawks' 4-0 run with her second goal of the game. Less than a minute later, Carnevale scored her first goal of the game to get the Mountain Hawks within one goal.Â
Saint Joseph's scored with five minutes left in the third quarter to extend its lead to 8-6. Memeger showed no signs of backing down as she went on to score her third goal of the game to help Lehigh get back within one goal.Â
The Hawks opened up the fourth quarter with a goal from Maggie Davidson around the 12 minute mark. With the score at 9-7, Lehigh's seniors stepped up and tied the score at 9-9. Carnevale scored with nine minutes remaining in regulation while Schneider scored her second goal of the day with 24 seconds left to send the game into overtime.Â
Both teams entered overtime with the same defensive intensity as the first quarter. Ultimately, Lehigh came out on top with Carnevale scoring her third goal of the day with four minutes left.Â
Lehigh led Saint Joseph's 30-27 in shots while Saint Joseph's had an 11-10 edge in groundballs. Lehigh goalkeeper Hayley Hunt and Saint Joseph's goalkeeper Jorden Concordia both tallied six saves.Â
Emma O'Neill led the Hawks with four points, three of which were from goals. Saint Joseph's Bonnie Yu led the team with two caused turnovers.Â
The Mountain Hawks will travel down to Spartanburg, S.C. to take on Wofford on Saturday, Feb. 18. Opening draw is set for 12 p.m. and the game will be streamed on ESPN+.Â
Lehigh will return to Bethlehehm on Saturday, Feb. 25 to host Saint Francis at 12 p.m. on ESPN+.Â
