Mountain Hawks Conclude Successful Weekend At ITA Regionals

PHILADELPHIA. – Lehigh men's tennis competed at the 2023 ITA Division-I Northeast Regional Championships hosted by Penn this weekend. The Mountain Hawks traveled five members of their team to Philadelphia to take part in singles and doubles play from October 6-9.

The Lehigh student-athletes in attendance this weekend were Marc Blekhman, Matt Kleiman, Jordan Paul, Aristotelis Bezianis and Jackson Morash. All Mountain Hawk players participated in singles competition while Blekhman/Kleiman and Bezianis/Morash were paired for doubles play.

The round of 64 for doubles competition kicked-off ITA Regionals on Friday, and Lehigh's day began with the pairing of Marc Blekhman and Matt Kleiman taking on Daniel Osap and Leon Harder of LIU. The match went to a tiebreaker, but Blekhman/Kleiman ultimately lost 8-7 (7-5). Aristotelis Bezianis and Jackson Morash began their tournament on a strong note, beating Wagner's David Krasner and Rodrigo Perez 8-7 (7-5).

Following the round of 64, the doubles round of 32 took place before singles play begun on Friday. Bezianis/Morash continued their solid play through the next round, defeating Carl Gustavson and Adam Groves of St. John's to advance to the round of 16.

Singles matches began following the doubles round of 32, and first up for Lehigh was Marc Blekhman, who fell 6-3, 6-2 to Niagara's Tanner Bedard. Matt Kleiman picked up in a win in his first singles match, defeating Stavros Hadjivarnava of Rider 6-2, 6-4. Jordan Paul dropped his opening bout against St. John's' Ryota Kaneda 6-4, 6-2 while Jackson Morash also fell in his singles match 6-1, 6-4 to Buffalo's Finn Macnamara. Lehigh's day concluded with Aristotelis Bezianis picking up a win over Gregory Troyan of Saint Francis 6-3, 6-4.

After a busy Friday full of tennis for the Mountain Hawks, only three matches took place for Lehigh on Saturday. Bezianis/Morash picked up where they left off in doubles play, defeating Alessandro Danna and Philip Hilble 8-4 to advance to the quarterfinals. Matt Kleiman battled Sachin Palta of Columbia to two tiebreaker sets, winning both 7-6 (13-11) and 7-6 (7-3). Aristotelis Bezianis concluded a perfect day for the Mountain Hawks with a closely-contested 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 victory over Filippos Astreinidis of Princeton to advance to the round of 32.

Bezianis/Morash's run to the quarterfinals came to a close on Sunday morning, as the pairing fell to Palta/Templeman of Columbia 8-4. Bezianis and Kleiman's weekends also came to an end, as both players fell in their respective round of 32 singles bouts.
