LANCASTER, Pa. – Fourteen members of the Lehigh wrestling team were in action Friday at the David H. Lehman F&M Open, hosted by Franklin & Marshall. Graduate student Tate Samuelson led the way with a runner-up finish at 184 as five Mountain Hawks earned top eight podium finishes at the event.
Â
Samuelson wrestled six bouts Friday, opening his day with three straight falls and four bonus wins. A 7-0 decision over Drexel's Josh Stillings punched Samuelson's ticket to the finals, where he fell victim to a third-period takedown in a 2-1 loss to Gavin Kane of North Carolina.
Â
First-year heavyweight Nathan Taylor claimed third place, scoring a takedown with 21 seconds remaining in sudden victory to defeat Travis Stefanik of Princeton 3-1. Taylor won his first three bouts Friday before suffering a semifinal loss.
Â
At 174, sophomore Jake Logan claimed third place winning his first three bouts before a 3-1 sudden victory setback in the semifinals. Logan received a win by medical forfeit in the third place match.
Â
Sophomore Malyke Hines began his day with four straight victories to reach the semifinals at 141. Hines came up on the short end of a 14-5 major decision in the semifinals and medically forfeited his third place bout to claim fourth place.
Â
Senior Jaret Lane went 4-1 with a pair of first-period pins at 125 and bounced back from a quarterfinal loss to reach the fifth place bout (semifinal losers wrestled for third). Lane did not wrestle the fifth place match as his opponent had reached his six bout limit for the day.
Â
In all, 12 of the 14 Lehigh entrants won at least one bout. Sophomore Drew Munch (149), junior AJ Burkhart (174), first-years Remy Brancato (184) and Jack Wilt (184) all picked up three victories on the day with Brancato finishing a victory shy of a spot on the podium. Burkhart went 3-1 in his first career action at 174 before medically forfeiting out.
Â
Owen Reinsel (141), Connor Herceg (165) and Karam Chakif (285) all posted 2-2 records Friday.
Â
Also competing for the brown and white at F&M were true first-year Kimo Leia (141) and third-year wrestler Sean Kilrain (174).
Â
The Mountain Hawks return to dual competition next weekend with the 100th meeting between Lehigh and Cornell, Saturday, Jan. 14 in Ithaca, N.Y. followed by a visit to Binghamton on Sunday, Jan. 15.
