Lehigh Rallies for a Comeback in 64-51 Win vs. Bucknell

1/5/2023 8:44:00 PM | Women's Basketball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women's basketball team rallied after being down early to capture a 64-51 victory against Bucknell on Thursday night at Stabler Arena.

"I'm really proud of how connected we played tonight and our effort and energy especially after the first five minutes," said head coach Addie Micir. " Bucknell came out and gave us a really good shot, and that's what they do. They're a really good team, and we had to respond, and we did for the next 35 minutes."

Before Thursday's game, Lehigh had played Bucknell eight times in the last two years. The Mountain Hawks only win versus the Bison in the last two seasons came in the Patriot League Semifinals on March 11, 2021.

Lehigh is now 2-1 in Patriot League play with an overall record of 6-8, while Bucknell is 4-10 and 0-3 in Patriot League play.

After Bucknell took a 15-6 lead with 2:34 in the first quarter, Lehigh took over from there.

A Frannie Hottinger layup 47 seconds into the second quarter gave Lehigh its first lead of the game, and the Mountain Hawks would not back down from there, holding onto a lead for the rest of the night

The Mountain Hawks outscored the Bison 27-11 in the second quarter while shooting 50% from the field to take a 41-26 lead at the half.

The third quarter saw a lot less scoring from Lehigh, but the Mountain Hawks won the third frame as well, outscoring Bucknell 15-9.

Hottinger secured her eighth double-double of the season in Thursday's game, finishing with a team-high 22 points and 11 rebounds. She entered the night needing just six rebounds to record 400 for her career.

"Frannie's playing like a senior should right now," Micir said. "Really really confident, and she's having a lot of fun. Throughout her career here, she had to play and defend Camryn Buhr every single day of her freshman year, and Cam is obviously one of our elite players in our program."

Mackenzie Kramer (14 points) and Ella Stemmer (13 points) were the other two Lehigh players to finish in double-figures. First-year Lily Fandre had six of her own points.

Stemmer also had a team-high of three assists.

Tai Johnson led Bucknell with 14 points.

Both teams took care of the ball tonight, with Lehigh only turning it over seven times while Bucknell had eight turnovers.

Lehigh controlled the glass tonight. The Mountain Hawks had 39 rebounds compared to the Bison's 33.

Bucknell's leading scorer Cecelia Collins did not play in Thursday night's game.

Lehigh will return home to host Navy Sunday at 2 p.m. before embarking on a two-game road trip.

"I think a lot more conference wins come from here, and it starts with another win versus Navy on Sunday," said Hottinger.

Thursday night's game was Lehigh's 3's For a Cure game, which was presented by Red Robin in partnership with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Lehigh finished with nine made three-pointers.
