BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women's basketball team got off to a hot start against Navy Sunday afternoon at Stabler Arena, connecting on 10 made three-pointers in the first quarter to help lift the Mountain Hawks to a 77-42 win.
"First thoughts are man did we come out ready to play," said head coach Addie Micir. "That's not just shooting, we did it on the defensive end too, so I'm really pumped about that. We talk a lot about having championship plays and championship behavior, and I thought we carried that all the way through."
The Mountain Hawks forced 17 turnovers and had eight blocks on Sunday.
Lehigh improved to 7-8 (3-1 PL), while Navy remains winless at 0-15 (0-4 PL).
"It was super fun," said Ella Stemmer. "We are always working on getting good energy and really getting back to playing joyfully, so I think we're on the rise with that, and it's really fun to take the court with my teammates."
Frannie Hottinger nailed the first three-pointer to give Lehigh a lead just eight seconds into the game, and Lehigh led for the next 39:52.
The Mountain Hawks started the game with three three-pointers, which forced a timeout by the Midshipmen. Their hot three-point shooting wouldn't stop from there.
Lehigh finished the first quarter with 10 made three-pointers, shooting 83.3% from beyond the arc after Mackenzie Kramer nailed one with two seconds left in the first frame.
Lehigh's defense shined on Sunday. The Mountain Hawks led 32-5 after one quarter and went into the half with a 47-18 lead.
Navy forced Lehigh to look elsewhere in the second half after the Mountain Hawks impressive shooting in the first half.
Lehigh ended the game going 13-of-27 from three while shooting 44.4% from the field on Sunday. Navy shot just 26.2%.
Hottinger recorded her ninth double-double of the season after recording 15 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Jamie Behar also had 15 points.
Sophomore Ella Stemmer, who was the only other player to finish in double figures on Sunday, shined in her first collegiate start, finishing with 10 points, three steals and two assists.
"Ella's turned herself into a two-way player," Micir said. " Last year, she was a great shooter and a really good passer, but she struggled a little bit on the defensive end. She has absolutely worked this season to turn herself into a defensive stopper. She's been really consistent with that throughout the whole year."
Mackenzie Kramer and Maddie Albrecht were close to notching double figures, both finishing with eight points. Albrecht's eight points tied a career-high, which she set against Army on Jan. 5, 2022. Albrecht also had four steals.
Lehigh controlled the paint, finishing with 30 points, compared to Navy's 22.
Thirty-nine of Lehigh's 77 points were from players who came off the bench. Everyone on Lehigh's roster also got in on Sunday.
The Midshipmen were led by first-year Maren Louridas, who finished with 15 points.
Lehigh will now go on a two-game road trip, taking on Holy Cross on Jan. 11 at 7 p.m. and American on Jan. 14 at 2 p.m.
