BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh head field hockey coach Caitlin Dallmeyer announced on Friday the addition of Teresa Mathews to staff as associate head coach. Mathews, who has been at Northeastern since 2018, rejoins the Mountain Hawks' program after serving three seasons on staff (2014-16), including as graduate assistant coach.

"I am thrilled to have Teresa back on staff after a long and successful stint at Northeastern," said Dallmeyer. "While at Lehigh, she completed her master's degree in Mental Health Counseling and Human Services, a degree that is tremendously impactful as we continue our ongoing mission to support the mental health of our student-athletes. While at Northeastern, she gained experience in training a goalkeeper with national team experience and focused on the development and success of a talented goalkeeping unit.

"Along with continuing her collegiate coaching career at a competitive level, Teresa has also made time to support our US Olympic Development Program as both a coach and selector," Dallmeyer continued. "She will be a big asset as we continue our efforts to turn Lehigh field hockey into a championship program."

Mathews has coached four seasons at Northeastern, most recently helping the Huskies to the CAA Tournament last fall where they fell to top-seeded and 24th nationally-ranked James Madison, 2-1. In that game, goalkeeper Erin Savage made a career-high 14 saves. Among Mathews' primary responsibilities was goalkeeper training; while there, she also coached Julia Gluyas, who has experience with the New Zealand Under-19 national team and was an All-CAA honoree in 2018.

"I am so glad to be back in the Lehigh Valley," said Mathews. "I'm grateful Caitlin, Murray H. Goodman Dean of Athletics Joe Sterrett and the rest of Lehigh who supported my return. I hope what I've learned in my time away can serve this team well, on and off the field, and I can't wait to get to work."

During her time in Boston, Mathews helped the Huskies to three CAA Tournament appearances (2018, 2019 and 2021), including a trip to the championship game in 2019. Northeastern finished that season 11-8 and 3-3 in the conference, beating second-seeded and No. 23 ranked William & Mary in the semifinals before falling to top-seeded and 11th ranked Delaware in the title game by a slim 2-1 final. That season, the Huskies also earned a top 25 national ranking for the first time since 2014.

Prior to Northeastern, Mathews served as top assistant at Saint Francis (Pa.) in 2017. The Red Flash finished the season 4-4 in the Atlantic 10. Mathews coached the goalkeepers, which included Elizabeth Dyer, who was a two-time All-Conference honoree in her career, once winning A-10 Goalkeeper of the Year.

At Lehigh, Mathews served on the Mountain Hawks' staff for three seasons and four years (remaining on staff into the 2017 calendar year). She was a key glue between coaching staffs, and Dallmeyer's arrival on campus in 2016. During that 2016 season, Mathews coached the Lehigh goalkeepers, who allowed 46 goals – their fewest at the time since the 2004 season. The Mountain Hawks tallied three shutouts, also their most since '04, which included shutting out Patriot League opponents Holy Cross and Colgate in consecutive games – the first time in program history Lehigh had shut-out consecutive league opponents.

Before Lehigh, Mathews was a standout goalkeeper at Monmouth. In her senior season of 2013, she shut-out Bryant and Sacred Heart. Mathews played in all 21 games as both a sophomore and junior. In her sophomore campaign, she compiled a stellar 74.8 save percentage and 1.69 GAA, recording her fourth shutout of the season in an NEC Semifinal win over Quinnipiac.

Also joining the Mountain Hawks' staff as assistant coach is Cara Bonshak. She comes to Lehigh after graduating from Michigan State. A three-time team captain for the Spartans, Bonshak is a Whitehall, Pennsylvania native; siblings Erinn (field hockey), Matt (baseball and wrestling) and Ryan (baseball) were all former Mountain Hawk student-athletes.

Cara will also be pursuing her graduate degree in Technical Entrepreneurship while at Lehigh. To learn more about Bonshak, please click here.
