Cara Bonshak begins her first season as Lehigh assistant coach in 2022. Following a decorated five-year career at Michigan State, the Whitehall native returns home to the Lehigh Valley to the place where her sister Erinn played field hockey. Brothers Matt (baseball and wrestling) and Ryan (baseball) were also student-athletes at Lehigh.

At Michigan State, Bonshak served as co-captain as a junior, senior and fifth-year. A midfielder, she started all 15 games last fall and posted four goals and 10 points, both good for second on the team. As a senior, she appeared in all 14 games, starting 13, while scoring a goal at Ohio State. She was a second team All-Big Ten and NFHCA second team All-Region honoree that season. As a junior in 2019, Bonshak was one of four Spartans to start all 18 games. She led the team with seven assists and scored her first-career goal against No. 18 Rutgers.

Over her first two seasons, Bonshak appeared in 14 games as a first-year and all 20 contests as a sophomore.

Outside of field hockey, Bonshak was a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee from 2018-21, collaborating with members of other sports and MSUC staff to better the experience of current and future Spartans. Bonshak was also on the Diversity and Leadership Committee, assisting in discussions between staff and student-athletes in regards to diversity and inclusion policies.

Bonshak took part in the Lake Michigan Circuit Research Project beginning in January of 2022, summarizing and assisting in analysis of various databases. Bonshak has extensive leadership and community service experience, including with the SAAC Food Drive, Teams for Toys, serving as team leader for Athletes for Hope and much more.

In the classroom, Bonshak graduated Michigan State with her Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. She was a six-time member of the Dean’s List and named Student-Athlete of the Month twice. At Lehigh, she is working towards her master’s degree in Technical Entrepreneurship.
