
Lehigh Falls 4-3 In Battle Against No. 19 Monmouth

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh field hockey fell 4-3 to No. 19 Monmouth in a back-and-forth battle on Friday night at Ulrich Field.
Lehigh struck first at 5:21 in the first quarter as Kiki Mes carried the ball into the circle and shot it into the back of the cage, giving Lehigh a 1-0 lead.
The Hawks responded less than two minutes later, evening the score up at 1-1.
Monmouth struck again on a penalty corner in the second quarter, carrying a 2-1 lead into intermission.
At 10:25 in the third quarter, Lehigh was awarded a penalty stroke as Carly Smith was fouled hard carrying the ball into the circle. Zoe Day put the stroke in the cage for the Mountain Hawks, tying the game up at 2-2.
The Hawks responded a couple minutes later with their third goal, gaining the lead back as Monmouth led 3-2.
At 1:45 in the third quarter, a Lehigh corner play broke up, in which Mes took a shot on cage that tied the game up at 3-3.
Monmouth scored the go-ahead goal with just under ten minutes remaining in the game, taking a 4-3 lead.
In the final seconds, Lehigh earned a penalty corner, but the shot was blocked as Monmouth held on to win 4-3.
Junior goalkeeper Kate Burgess made six saves, while Monmouth's Charlie Bowman made one.
Lehigh (1-3) returns home to Ulrich Field on Sunday to host Temple at 1 p.m. It will be the program's Pink Game presented by Lehigh Valley Topper Cancer Institute.
