Leopards Claim Regular Season Meeting Of The Rivalry

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh field hockey team fell 3-0 to Lafayette on Friday night, in The Rivalry Presented by Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute, part of Jefferson Health.

The opening quarter remained knotted 0-0 between the teams, with Lafayette holding a 4-1 advantage in shots.

With under a minute to play in the first half, Lafayette earned a penalty corner. Stella Malinowski connected on a deflection at the far post to give the Leopards a 1-0 edge.

The Leopards maintained momentum in the third quarter, outshooting Lehigh 7-2.Â

At 12:51 in the fourth quarter, Lafayette picked up another penalty corner. Josephine van Wijk sent a sweep in from the top of the circle, which deflected off a defender's stick into the net as the Leopards increased their lead to 2-0.

In the final seconds of the contest, Lafayette earned its seventh penalty corner of the game. Lehigh goalkeeper Kate Burgess made the initial save on the play, but Lafayette recovered the ball. Lena Thedrian sent a pass across the goal mouth to Kiley Gallager who redirected it into the cage, securing the 3-0 victory for the Leopards.

Burgess recorded 10 saves, while Preseason Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year, Raffi Fragomeni, made two for Lafayette.
