Wildcats edge Mountain Hawks in defensive battle

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh field hockey battled against Villanova at home on Sunday afternoon but fell 2-0. Villanova (6-1) generated pressure throughout the contest, recording 23 shots and 11 penalty corners while Lehigh (1-5) was held to two shots and one penalty corner in the defensive battle.
The Mountain Hawks kept the game scoreless through the opening 25 minutes behind a strong performance from Senior goalkeeper Kate Burgess, who finished with 12 saves. Villanova broke through at the 25:35 mark when Gemma Lysaght scored off assists from Maeve Boston and Molly Zimmerman, giving the Wildcats a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
Lehigh's defense continued to hold firm in the second half as Georgia Reynolds recorded a defensive save in the third quarter and Burgess added three more saves. Villanova doubled its advantage late in the fourth quarter when Adie Minnella converted a penalty stroke at 57:40. The Wildcats held on over the final minutes to secure the 2-0 victory.
Burgess finished the afternoon with 12 saves on 14 shots on goal. Reynolds and Samantha Hillman each recorded one shot for Lehigh.
The Mountain Hawks return to Ulrich Field on Saturday, September 19 at 11 a.m. to face the Crusaders of Holy Cross in the Patriot League opener.
