Crusaders Defeat Mountain Hawks in Patriot League Opener

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh field hockey battled through a defensive contest against Holy Cross on Saturday morning but fell 4-0 in the Patriot League opener at Ulrich Field. Holy Cross generated consistent pressure throughout the contest, recording 25 shots and eight penalty corners, while Lehigh was held without a shot.
The Mountain Hawks leaned on a strong defensive performance from senior goalkeeper Kate Burgess, who finished with 11 saves. Burgess kept Lehigh within striking distance early, making three saves in the opening quarter before Holy Cross broke through at the 6:16 mark when Ava Huntley scored to give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead.
Burgess continued to stand tall in the second half, coming up with a pair of crucial penalty-stroke saves. At 32:46, Marianna Maclean was denied by Burgess on Holy Cross' first penalty stroke of the afternoon. Burgess came up big again at 49:53, stopping Kendall Brady's penalty stroke to keep the Crusaders from extending their advantage.
Holy Cross added two goals in the third quarter, while Georgia Reynolds recorded a defensive save to prevent another Holy Cross scoring opportunity. The Crusaders added a final goal at 57:37 when Maclean converted off an assist from Kendall Brady to secure the 4-0 victory.
The Mountain Hawks return to action tomorrow as they take on Wagner in Staten Island, N. Y. at 1 p.m.
