Wagner Pulls Away from Mountain Hawks, 4-1

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Lehigh field hockey put together a strong offensive response in the second quarter, but Wagner pulled away for a 4-1 victory over the Mountain Hawks on Sunday afternoon.

Wagner struck first just 1:07 into the game, as Felicitas Herrero-Martel found the cage to give the Seahawks an early 1-0 advantage. Lehigh's defense settled in from there, with senior goalkeeper Kate Burgess making three saves in the opening quarter. Sarah Ryan also came up with a defensive save to keep Wagner from adding to its lead. At 19:43 of the second quarter, Ella Stephenson put a shot on goal that was saved by Wagner goalkeeper Miley Brezgel.

The Seahawks doubled their advantage at 20:05 when Riahna Pollard scored off an assist from Herrero-Martel. Lehigh answered just over a minute later, as first year Emily Selcher put the Mountain Hawks on the board at 21:09. The goal marked Selcher's first of her career and brought Lehigh within one.

Burgess kept Lehigh in the contest throughout the second half, turning away eight shots in the final two quarters. She finished with 15 saves, making this her fourth game in a row with double digit saves. Wagner added two goals in the second half, with Natalie McGivern finding the cage at 54:36 to cap the scoring and secure the 4-1 victory.

The Seahawks held the advantage in offensive opportunities, totaling 32 shots and 20 shots on goal compared to five shots and two shots on goal for Lehigh. The Seahawks also earned 15 penalty corners, while the Mountain Hawks recorded three.

Lehigh returns home Saturday, September 26th at 12 p.m. to take on Colgate for another Patriot League game.
