Mountain Hawks Fall In Road Contest At Sacred Heart

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Lehigh field hockey fell 3-1 on the road to Sacred Heart, on Sunday at Yale's Johnson Field.

The Pioneers struck first at 6:37 on a penalty corner. Emma Brayford sent in a shot from the top of the circle that was deflected into the net, giving Sacred Heart an early 1-0 lead.

Across the first half, Sacred Heart outshot the Mountain Hawks 12-8 and out-cornered them 8-3.

Sacred Heart opened the second half scoring at 11:45 in the third, as Ines Braithwaite sent in a ball that Holly DeAngelo deflected past Kate Burgess, giving the Pioneers a 2-0 edge.

At 7:30, the Pioneers earned a penalty corner. Brayford connected again for her second goal of the game as Sacred Heart led 3-0.

Lehigh earned a penalty stroke at 6:03 in the fourth quarter after the ball hit a defender's foot behind the goalkeeper. Ella Stephenson put the ball into the cage, decreasing the Pioneers lead to 3-1.

The Mountain Hawks earned four penalty corners in the final minutes, but were unable to convert as Sacred Heart won 3-1.

Burgess made seven saves, while her Sacred Heart counterpart, Brianna Cooper, recorded four.
