BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Winners of four in a row, the Lehigh women's lacrosse team continues its busy stretch of games by returning home on Monday to host American at 7 p.m. on ESPN+. It will mark the Mountain Hawks' third home game in six days, following wins over Lafayette (16-6) and Holy Cross (12-4) to clinch the program's eighth straight Patriot League Tournament berth.
On Saturday, Lehigh used a 5-1 second quarter to take a commanding halftime lead, on the way to the eight-goal victory. Another all-around team effort saw juniors Katia Carnevale and Emma Eberhardt score four goals apiece. Defensively, senior Claire Keller covered Holy Cross leading scorer Jolie Creo, who was sixth nationally in points per game coming in. Creo had 75 points coming in (51 goals, 24 assists), but zero on Saturday. It was the first point-less Patriot League game of her career. Keller also tallied a career-high three caused turnovers in the Senior Day victory.
Fellow senior defenders Emma McGillis (five groundballs, three caused turnovers) and Jenna Garden (three groundballs, two caused turnovers) also impressed. The Mountain Hawks caused 12 of Holy Cross' 17 turnovers for the game. Anchoring the defense was sophomore goalkeeper Hayley Hunt, who made a career-high 19 saves, allowing just four goals. She stopped 30-of-40 sent her way for the week.
Senior Nora Giordano had another impressive effort, tying a career-high five points that she set one Saturday previously (at Boston University). Lehigh beat Holy Cross for a seventh straight time, tying a program record in the all-time series.
The victory improves the Mountain Hawks to 4-3 in league play. Lehigh is in the No. 4 spot in the league standings and needs to win each of its last two (Monday vs. American and Thursday at Colgate) to secure the home game in the quarterfinals for the fifth time in the last six Patriot League Tournaments.
American stands 8-7 on the season, 3-4 in Patriot League play. The Eagles were 2-0 in the league, but have lost four of the last five - most recently dropping a 16-15 final to Colgate on Saturday. American is strong offensively, averaging 13.00 goals per game, led by four players with 45 or more points. Emma Vinall leads the way with 43 goals and 52 points. Stefanie Walsh has 51 points (35 goals, 16 assists), followed by Kendall Goldblum with 48 (36 goals, 12 assists) and Maddy Spratt with 45 (23 goals, team-leading 22 assists). Vinall's 101 draw controls lead the team while Walsh's 23 caused turnovers are No. 1 on the Eagles. Mary Alice Collins has seen the majority of time in goal, recording a 13.20 goals against average and 44.9 save percentage.
Lehigh has won eight in a row against the Eagles, last losing in 2013 at American by a 16-8 final. Last season, the Mountain Hawks went 2-0 against American, winning on the road (12-10) and at home (21-6). The previous home game, Lehigh picked up a 20-3 win. Overall, the Mountain Hawks lead the all-time series, 12-11. Lehigh won the first-ever meeting in 1994, 20-4, but American won the next six (spanning 2002-05).
Following Monday's game, the Mountain Hawks head to Colgate for the regular season finale on Thursday. Opening draw is set for 4 p.m. on ESPN+.
