Mountain Hawks Beat Holy Cross, 12-4, for Fourth Straight Win

4/23/2022 8:26:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After trailing 1-0 early, the Lehigh women's lacrosse team scored the next five goals and wouldn't look back, beating visiting Holy Cross 5-1 on Senior Day Saturday. The win marks the Mountain Hawks' fourth straight as they improve to 7-7 on the season, 4-3 in Patriot League play with two regular-season games remaining.

Junior Katia Carnevale scored four goals to up her total to 12 goals on the week over two games. Classmate Emma Eberhardt had four goals as well, while senior Nora Giordano posted five points (two goals, career-high three assists) to tie a career high. She now has 18 points over her last four games.

Another senior shined on the defensive end, as Claire Keller posted a groundball and career-high three caused turnovers, but most impressively, shut-out Holy Cross' leading scorer Jolie Creo – who was sixth nationally in points per game coming in. Creo had 75 points coming in (51 goals, 24 assists), but zero on Saturday. She had tallied multiple points in every game this season, including 24 points over her previous three games. The last time Creo was held to less than two points was on Apr. 26, 2019 at Loyola when she had one assist. Saturday was the first time the senior Creo was ever held point-less in a Patriot League game and only second time in her career (the other being on Mar. 3, 2019 at Siena). Senior Emma McGillis had a huge game as well, posting a career-high five groundballs and three caused turnovers (to tie a career high). Senior Jenna Garden tallied three groundballs and two caused turnovers in a strong effort. Sophomore Hayley Hunt finished with a career-high 18 saves in goal, allowing just the four goals.

The teams entered the second quarter tied at one, but that's when the Mountain Hawks' offense caught fire. Eberhardt scored at 13:32 and 12:05 to give her side a 3-1 lead. Goals from junior Gabby Schneider (who tallied a goal and two assists for the game), Eberhardt and first year Angelina Pino gave the Mountain Hawks a 6-1 advantage late in the first half. They led 6-2 at the half. Carnevale opened the third quarter with her second and third of the game (at 8:38 and 3:01), setting the tone for a strong finish. In the fourth, Carnevale, Giordano and Eberhardt all scored, while the defense held the Crusaders without a goal, to wrap up the 12-4 win. It marked the second long shutout streak of the game for the Mountain Hawks, as they also shut-out Holy Cross for a stretch of 25:09 in the first. Final shots were 32-29 in favor of Holy Cross while the Mountain Hawks held a 22-14 edge in groundballs and 12-9 advantage in draw controls. After Hunt's nine saves, senior Kerry McHugh entered and stopped the only shot sent her way over the final 4:11. Holy Cross' Grace Flink finished with six stops.

The Mountain Hawks remain home to host American on Monday at 7 p.m. on ESPN+ in a game that was originally scheduled for Saturday, Apr. 9.
