Lehigh, No. 7 Loyola Open Patriot League Play With Rematch of Title Game
3/17/2022 5:20:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The 2021 Patriot League slate begins on Saturday for Lehigh and Loyola Maryland with a rematch of last season's title game. This time, it will be played in Bethlehem as the women's lacrosse team host the Greyhounds at 1 p.m. on ESPN+. For a second straight season, the Mountain Hawks began 0-2, but like last year, they have responded - having won three of their last four entering this weekend.
Most recently, Lehigh picked up an 11-8 win against Coastal Carolina last Friday in a neutral-site game held at Johns Hopkins' Homewood Field. The Mountain Hawks were in control from the start, taking an early 3-0 lead in the game's first 10 minutes. The lead eventually extended to 8-3 early in the third quarter. The Chanticleers got within three on three occasions (8-5, 10-7 and 11-8), but couldn't get any closer.
Sophomore Olivia Memeger enjoyed a career day with career highs in goals (4), assists (2) and points (6). Junior Emma Eberhardt finished with three goals and three assists, as she's rapidly approaching 50 career goals, 50 assists and 100 points - currently 44, 46 and 90, respectively. Classmate Gabby Schneider dished four assists while another junior, Cassie Marte, tied a career-high two goals.
Defensively, the Mountain Hawks caused seven of Coastal Carolina's 15 turnovers, led by three from Schneider. Sophomore Hayley Hunt made 10 saves in goal, all coming in the first three quarters, as she now stands second in the nation in both save percentage (57.8) and saves per game (13.0). In Lehigh's 3-1 month of March, the Mountain Hawks have allowed single-digit goals three times (five vs. La Salle, eight against Wagner in overtime and eight vs. Coastal Carolina). In total, Lehigh has allowed just 8.0 goals per game this month to lower its season average to 10.33, which is 28th in the nation.
The Greyhounds stand 6-0 on the season and are up to No. 7 in the most recent ILWomen/IWLCA Division I poll. Among Loyola's wins was a recent 12-9 home victory over No. 12 Florida. Loyola owns the nation's No. 7 scoring defense (8.33) and No. 9 scoring margin (5.83). Livy Rosenzweig leads the Greyhounds in goals (17), assists (9) and points (26). Her 83.3 percentage is fourth nationally. Jillian Wilson leads Loyola in draw controls (37); her 6.17 per game are 22nd nationally. Defensively, Kaitlyn Larsson stands sixth in the country in goals against average (8.35) and 18th in save percentage (48.4). The Greyhounds feature all four Patriot League preseason major award winners in Attacker of the Year (Rosenzweig), Midfielder of the Year (Sam Fiedler), Defensive Player of the Year (Katie Detwiler) and Goalkeeper of the Year (Larsson).
Loyola leads the all-time series against Lehigh, 14-5, including 9-0 since the Greyhounds joined the Patriot League for the 2014 season. The Mountain Hawks have come close on multiple occasions, though, including a 14-13 overtime loss on Apr. 16, 2016 and 12-11 defeat on Apr. 15, 2017. Last season, the teams played in the Patriot League Championship Game, which saw the Greyhounds win, 11-6. Loyola jumped out to a 9-3 halftime lead, but the Mountain Hawks battled in the second half and outscored the Greyhounds, 3-2, but it wasn't enough. The teams first met in 1982, a 5-4 Loyola win. Lehigh won the next meeting (also in 1982), 8-2.
Following Saturday's game, the Mountain Hawks return home on Tuesday, Mar. 22 for a nonleague contest vs. UC Davis. Gametime is set for 4 p.m.
