Saint Joseph’s Storms Back to Win in Lehigh’s Season Opener, 13-11

PHILADELPHIA – The Lehigh women's lacrosse team jumped out to a 7-2 lead after one quarter, but Saint Joseph's held a 4-0 edge in the fourth to down the Mountain Hawks, 13-11 on Wednesday. The starting attack for Lehigh combined for nine goals and four assists, with each scoring multiple times. Making her Lehigh debut, sophomore Hayley Hunt finished with 13 saves in a strong performance between the pipes.
Wednesday was a matchup of teams that advanced to its respective conference finals last season - Saint Joseph's in the Atlantic 10 and Lehigh in the Patriot League.
Offensively, junior Gabby Schneider tallied a team-high five points via two goals and three assists. Sophomore Olivia Memeger scored three goals for her first-career hat trick, while juniors Emma Eberhardt and Katia Carnevale each scored twice.
Senior Jenna Garden led the defense with two caused turnovers. Eberhardt and junior Cassie Marte each recorded a team-high five draw controls. Sophomore Caroline Casey finished with a team-high three groundballs, along with a caused turnover.
Lehigh had an impressive answer, getting goals from Carnevale and senior Nora Giordano to take an 11-9 lead into the fourth, but Saint Joseph's scored four unanswered goals in the first 6:52 of the final period. Lehigh didn't score for the game's final 19:12, with Saint Joseph's goalkeeper Jorden Concordia making three of her 12 stops in that stretch.
Final shots were 31-29 in favor of Saint Joseph's while the Hawks held a 13-12 edge in groundballs. Saint Joseph's finished with an 18-10 edge in draw controls, including 5-0 in the fourth quarter.
Next up, the Mountain Hawks remain on the road next Saturday (Feb. 26) to face No. 17 Rutgers. Gametime is set for 1 p.m.

After Saint Joseph's pulled within two, Lehigh responded with four of the next five. Lehigh answered with goals from Schneider and Memeger, but Saint Joseph's would score the next four – bridging the end of the second and beginning of the third quarters.
