Navy defeats Lehigh in final game of weekend series in Annapolis

5/2/2021 5:46:00 PM | Baseball

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Attempting to accomplish a three-game weekend sweep of Navy Sunday afternoon at Max Bishop Stadium, the Lehigh baseball team fell short of its goal, falling 7-2 in the final game of the season series between the two teams. The Mountain Hawks (18-15, 14-9 PL) clinched the season series on Saturday with two victories over the Midshipmen (14-12, 9-11 PL) at J. David Walker Field, still looking to clinch the top overall seed in the Patriot League Tournament beginning in two weeks.

Offense was the difference on Saturday, but on Sunday, the Mountain Hawks' bats fell silent against Navy pitching as Charlie Connolly went four strong innings allowing just a single earned run, while Trey Braithwaite pitched the final 2.1 innings of relief, allowing just a run on three hits with three strikeouts to seal the win for the Mids.

After Navy scored first in the bottom of the first, freshman Tyler Young came through with a single through the left side, scoring senior Quinn McKenna in which Young advanced to second on a throwing error and Chase Carlson advanced to third on a separate throwing error on the same play.

Facing Lehigh lefty Matt Stamford, the Midshipmen scored twice in the bottom of the third by way of a single and a fielder's choice to take a 3-1 lead.

Navy extended its cushion to six runs with an RBI single, a two-RBI double and another RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to extend the lead to 7-1.

The Mountain Hawks had their best chance to break through in the top of the seventh inning with two outs, after Casey Rother, Andrew Nole and Adam Retzbach drew back-to-back-to-back walks against Jared Leins. With Braithwaite entered into the game in relief with the bases loaded, he struck out Quinn McKenna to end the inning and the threat.

McKenna was able to come through with an RBI knock in the top of the ninth and two outs following a Rother single and Nole walk to make it a 7-2 Navy lead, but Chase Carlson grounded out to the second baseman on the first pitch to end the game as the Midshipmen prevailed for the victory.

Young went 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI to lead the way for Lehigh, while McKenna was 1-for-3 with an RBI single, a walk and a sacrifice bunt. Nole went 0-for-2 but drew three walks against Navy pitching. Stamford went three innings and allowed three runs on five hits with two walks, saddled with his first loss of the season.

Senior Sam Wurth went 2.2 innings of relief without allowing an earned run, giving up two hits, walking two and striking out two as well. Freshman right-hander Tyler Thompson finished out the outing with a scoreless inning of relief, striking out two Midshipmen.

The Mountain Hawks head to Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday at 3 p.m. for the final non-league contest of the regular season. Lehigh is scheduled to conclude Patriot League play next weekend with three games against Bucknell – two in Lewisburg on Saturday and one at Walker Field on Sunday – before the Patriot League Tournament begins on May 15.
