
Lehigh Athletics Weekend Preview

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Patriot League Tournament action for the women's and men's lacrosse teams, the end of the regular season for baseball and softball, the Rivalry on the softball field and a last chance meet for the track and field teams highlight this week in Lehigh Athletics. As announced March 5, The Lehigh University COVID-19 Response Team approved a request from the Athletics Department to permit a limited number (2) of Lehigh team guests (submitted in advance) to attend our outdoor home sports events, and enter the permanent seating area of our venues, which is well-defined by fencing and gates at some venues and that will be defined and secured at other venues. The two guests will be expected to adhere to all University and Athletics Department health and safety protocols (PDF) throughout their visit to our Goodman Campus. Visiting team guests are not permitted inside our venues at this time unless directly communicated to the visiting team for a specific event.
Track and Field
The Mountain Hawks had so much success at West Point last week that they decided to head back today. Lehigh will compete at Army's Twilight Meet at 3 p.m. inside Shea Stadium. The Mountain Hawks are coming off last weekend's Patriot League Championships, an event in which the Brown and White placed on the podium in eight events. Kaja Skerlj (400mH), Maddy Harding (heptathlon), Connor Melko (5K) and Jeffrey Kirshenbaum (10K) all earned a silver medal after finishing second in their events. Kerry Perna (high jump), Nick Norton (steeplechase) and both the 4x800m relay groups finished with a bronze. The women's relay group consisted of Hetty McMillan, Jade Sessions, Miranda Royds and Carly Friend, while the men's group included Joseph Cranley, Brian Healy, Brandtson Duffie and Jacob Martinez. The men's team finished fourth (best finish since the 2012-13 season) after the two-day event, while the women's team concluded the weekend with a fifth-place finish.

Coming off one of the program's most dramatic wins in recent memory, the Lehigh women's lacrosse team looks to ride the momentum into the Patriot League Semifinals vs. Army West Point on Thursday night. Game time from Loyola's Ridley Athletic Complex is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+ after the first semifinal of the day between Colgate and Loyola at 3 p.m. The Mountain Hawks advanced to the semifinals behind a thrilling 13-12 overtime win over Navy on Monday. Junior Nora Giordano was the hero on Monday, scoring 2:30 into the extra session – off a great pass from sophomore Gabby Schneider – to send the Mountain Hawks home winners.

Men's Lacrosse
The No. 9 Lehigh men's lacrosse team is ready for its second season as the Mountain Hawks host Colgate in the Patriot League Semifinals on Friday at 4 p.m. at the Ulrich Sports Complex. With a perfect 8-0 league record, the Mountain Hawks are set to host the league semis and championship game for the first time since 2013. Following Lehigh's showdown with Colgate, Army West Point and Loyola will square off at 7 p.m. Both games can be seen live nation-wide on CBS Sports Network. Lehigh has advanced to 10 straight Patriot League Tournaments, the longest active streak in the league. The Mountain Hawks have advanced to five of the last eight championship games entering this season.

Softball
The Mountain Hawks will close out the regular season with a four-game, home-and-home rivalry series with Lafayette. Action both days begins at noon with Saturday's doubleheader set for Easton, Pa., and Sunday's to be played at Leadership Park. All four games will be broadcast on ESPN+. Lehigh begins the final weekend at 12-14 overall and 10-8 in the Patriot League. The Mountain Hawks have won four straight games, sweeping doubleheaders against Bucknell and Holy Cross, and have not allowed an earned run in those 28 innings. Lehigh begins the final weekend in third place in the league standings, even with second place Colgate and fourth place Army in the loss column and four ahead of fifth place Bucknell in the loss column. Freshman pitcher Kaitlyn Young has won back-to-back Patriot League Rookie of the Week awards. Junior Jaelynn Chesson is heating up again at the plate. She went 4-for-8 last weekend with five RBIs and ranks third nationally in doubles per game (0.58) and RBI per game (1.5). Lehigh will recognize seniors Payton Alsobrooks and Allyson Dibsie following Sunday's doubleheader. Lafayette is 1-15 overall and 1-11 in the Patriot League with its only victory coming at Colgate on April 9. The Leopards will host Army West Point in a doubleheader Thursday prior to the Lehigh series.

Already having clinched a spot in the Patriot League Tournament for the first time since 2016, the Mountain Hawks (18-15, 14-9 PL) head to Worcester, Mass. this weekend for a four-game series against Holy Cross – doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday at noon – at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field. With just four games left on the schedule, Lehigh's season comes down to seeding in the PLT field, trying to clinch the regular season title and host at least a semifinal round contest as Army West Point faces Navy for four games this weekend as well. The Mountain Hawks earned two weekly awards after a 3-1 week against Navy and Fairleigh Dickinson as sophomore catcher Adam Retzbach was named Patriot League Player of the Week and junior right-hander Mason Black earned Pitcher of the Week recognition for the third time this season. Black is 6-2 with a 2.81 ERA in 10 starts and also has a league-best 80 strikeouts. He currently leads the Patriot League in all three Pitching Triple Crown categories, with senior Matt Svanson trailing him by .01 with a 2.82 ERA in 10 appearances. The Mountain Hawks have posted two of the top five individual batting averages in the Patriot League led by senior Eric Cichocki on top batting .350 while junior Casey Rother is fifth with a mark of .341 in 32 games. Holy Cross is fighting for a spot in the Patriot League Tournament field currently 8-12 in the league with an overall record of 9-17. The Crusaders have lost four straight games after falling to Merrimack on Wednesday and dropping three of four games to Army West Point last weekend. Like Lehigh, Holy Cross has a stellar stable of starting pitchers led by Garret Keough (2-1, 3.75 ERA) and joined by Alex Bryant (3-2, 3.86), Jack DiLauro (1-1, 4.41) and Luke Dawson (1-3, 4.78). Thomas Latham is slashing .309/.330/.420 offensively while Angelo D'Acunto is slashing .306/.435/.384 with two home runs and 14 RBIs this year.
