BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's lacrosse team celebrated its seniors in impressive fashion on Wednesday, jumping out to a 14-3 lead with 9:48 still remaining in the first half and cruising to a 21-6 victory over visiting American. Graduate student Sondra Dickey led the offense with five goals and seven points while senior Cecily Redfern tied a career-high five points (three goals, two assists). Junior Nora Giordano posted career highs in goals (3) and assists (4) as part of Lehigh's second game scoring 20 goals on the season.
The Mountain Hawks' 21 goals are their most since 2009 when they also scored 21 against American. After scoring eight goals in the first meeting with the Eagles, sophomore Katia Carnevale added four more on Wednesday. Classmate Gabby Schneider had two goals and an assist while senior Hannah Cermack recorded a goal and three assists. Freshman Olivia Memeger posted her first-career multi-point game with a goal and assist.
"Shout out to American for making the trip up here," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "Every game that everyone has been able to play this season has been a victory (amidst the pandemic). Proud of both teams for getting out here today and representing the Patriot League."
Scoring came early and often as less than 10 minutes in, a Carnevale goal put the Mountain Hawks ahead 7-3. Lehigh added seven more goals before the first half was complete, the last six of the half scored by six different Mountain Hawks, to take a 14-3 halftime lead.
American scored the first two of the second half, but the Mountain Hawks ended the game on a 7-1 run, featuring six different goal scorers. Giordano scored twice in that stretch, including the game's final goal with 5:46 remaining, for the 21-6 final.
Final shots were 34-18 in favor of Lehigh while the Mountain Hawks held a 14-11 edge in groundballs and 17-13 advantage in draw controls. Four different Lehigh goalkeepers saw action with senior Samantha Sagi making three saves, junior Kerry McHugh making two and senior Claudia Hanover recording one.
As part of Wednesday's game, the Mountain Hawks recognized their senior class, featuring five traditional seniors and three graduate students (fifth-year seniors).
"So happy to have the opportunity to celebrate our eight seniors today," said Jill Redfern. "They have persevered and achieved at a very high level under extraordinary circumstances. We also want to acknowledge our 2020 senior class as they too set the course for our success."
The Mountain Hawks will now await their opponent for the Patriot League Quarterfinals, which were recently reinstated by the league. Lehigh will host the winner of Friday's Bucknell at Navy game in the quarterfinals Monday, May 3 at a time to be determined.
