Colonials claim two from Lehigh in Washington

3/6/2021 5:46:00 PM | Baseball

WASHINGTON – Looking to improve upon a perfect start to the 2021 season, the moment was short-lived for the Lehigh baseball team, falling to George Washington twice Saturday afternoon, 9-2 in Game 1 and 4-1 in Game 2 at Barcroft Park.

The first two innings of the first game of the series was highlighted by seven Mountain Hawk walks against the Colonials' starting pitcher, but only one run managed to come across after Joe Gorla was walked with the bases loaded, bringing in Eric Cichocki. That gave Lehigh a 1-0 lead.

GW tied the game up in the second at 1 and then in the fifth, a three-RBI double to right center field gave the Colonials a 4-1 lead.

In the top of the sixth inning, Gerard Sweeney doubled down the right field line, advancing to third base on the throw and scored Cichocki to cut the GW lead in half at 4-2. In the bottom of the inning, GW got four runs to come across to score thanks to a three-run home run and an RBI single, making it 8-2.

GW tacked on one more run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly to left field, clinching the 9-2 victory in the first game.

For Lehigh, junior right-hander Mason Black still had his strikeout stuff working, punching out five batters, but also gave up four runs, three earned and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings, throwing 94 pitches.

At the plate, it was Eric Cichocki who came through again, building off his Patriot League Player of the Week honor earned earlier in the week. He went 2-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored. Gerard Sweeney was 1-for-2 with two walks and an RBI, while both Tyler Young and Chase Carlson each recorded hits themselves.

In the second game, the Colonials got off the ground running fast with four runs off Lehigh lefty Luke Rettig in the first two innings, leading 4-0 heading into the top of the third inning.

It wasn't until the fifth that the Mountain Hawks put a run on the board as freshman Andrew Nole doubled to left field, scoring Carlson to cut the gap to 4-1.

GW's Connor Harris threw two shutout innings with three strikeouts to earn the save, as the Colonials got the 4-1 victory in seven innings.

Lehigh managed just three hits against GW pitching with Sweeney, Carlson and Nole each adding to the fold.

In relief, sophomore righty Will Grisack pitched well in 1 2/3 innings, allowing just a single hit with a walk and a strikeout.

Lehigh will return to the field tomorrow at noon against George Washington for two from Diamond Nation in Flemington, N.J. There will be no live stream or live stats available for the doubleheader.
