BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Thanks to eight first-half goals, strong defense and impressive goalkeeping, the Lehigh women's lacrosse team jumped out to an 8-0 halftime advantage and wouldn't look back, downing visiting Army West Point 14-7 on Saturday at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The win marks the Mountain Hawks' third straight as they improve to 3-2 in league play. Senior Samantha Sagi stopped the first 11 shots sent her way, finishing with 16 saves on the afternoon. Graduate student Sondra Dickey filled up the stat sheet and in doing so, moved into 10th place in program history for career groundballs (123) and tied for 10th for assists (51). She becomes the first player in program history in the top 10 in those two categories, along with goals, points, draw controls and caused turnovers.
"I thought we had very strong performances at every position," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "Sam and Sondra were both terrific and clearly made a big difference in the game."
Dickey finished with six goals, one assist, eight draw controls, three groundballs and a caused turnover. Meanwhile, classmate and close defender Alexandra Ladda collected two groundballs on the afternoon, but also held Army's leading scorer Caroline Raymond – who had a team-high 18 goals and 25 points last season – without a point.
Sophomore Gabby Schneider added five points via two goals and three assists. Senior Hannah Cermack tallied two goals, two assists, two groundballs and two caused turnovers. Sophomore Emma Eberhardt recorded two goals and two assists as well.
Dickey opened the scoring with two goals in the first 3:02 of the contest. Five minutes in, the Mountain Hawks had a 4-0 lead. Lehigh went on to double its advantage with efficient offense, strong defense and 10 first-half saves from Sagi.
The Black Knights scored the first three second-half goals to pull within 8-3 with 22:22 on the clock, but the Mountain Hawks answered with six of the next eight, including a string of four in a row, to open a 14-5 lead with 4:01 remaining. Army scored two late goals, but it wasn't nearly enough.
Lehigh finished with a 32-27 edge in shots and 13-10 advantage in draw controls, while the Black Knights held a 17-14 edge in groundballs. Sagi's 16 saves were a season high. Army's Hannah Slomkowski made seven.
"Confidence and momentum are key in the Patriot League season," said Redfern. "We're just now finding our stride. We're trending upwards in all positive ways. With our start and the pandemic and everything, we're just now figuring out who we are and executing better."
The Mountain Hawks remain home next weekend to host Bucknell at 12 p.m. on ESPN+.
