Early Second-Half Goal Downs Mountain Hawks at Loyola
10/16/2021 5:04:00 PM | Women's Soccer
BALTIMORE – The Lehigh women's soccer defense was strong, allowing just a single shot on goal all game, but that attempt found the back of the net in the 46th minute and it was enough for homestanding Loyola to win, 1-0 on Saturday afternoon. With the defeat, the Mountain Hawks fall to 3-3-1 in Patriot League play with two league contests remaining – at American (Oct. 23) and vs. Bucknell (Oct. 27).
Â
"It was a frustrating game," said Lehigh head coach Eric Lambinus. "We created some chances, but it was another game that turned on a call, whether it's right or wrong, it turned on a call. We lost the BU game on a penalty kick that was very questionable. Here the same thing."
Â
In the first minute of the second half, a tough foul call on Lehigh led to a Greyhounds' free kick, which they capitalized on. Baylee DeSmit beat freshman goalkeeper Abby Trainor to give Loyola a 1-0 lead.
Â
The first half saw the Mountain Hawks hold a 3-1 edge in shots and 2-1 advantage in corner kicks, but there were no shots on goal for either side in the stanza.
Â
"In the first half, I thought we played well, controlled the tempo and controlled the game," said Lambinus. "We feel we maybe should've come out of the half with a goal. A minute into the second half, we're down a goal and the entire game changed. We did a good job defensively and created chances, but we lost our patience. Loyola wanted to be more up-tempo and direct. We had to be more patient in the final third."
Â
Less than five minutes after Loyola's goal, senior Courtney Supp headed a shot on goal, which Paige Sim stopped. The Greyhounds responded with the next seven shots, all off target, but the Mountain Hawks wouldn't go down quietly. Lehigh ended with the final three shots of the match, including shots on goal by sophomore Emma Roesing in the 84th minute and classmate Ava Schaller in the 90th minute, but Sim was there to make the stops.
Â
Final shots were 9-7 in favor of Loyola while corner kicks were tied at 2-2.

Lehigh returns home for its final nonleague contest, hosting Princeton on Tuesday at 5 p.m. on ESPN+. It marks the first game of a doubleheader as the Mountain Hawks' men's team welcomes the Princeton men at 7:30 p.m.
