Mountain Hawks Drop Nonleague Finale vs. Princeton, 2-0
10/19/2021 10:11:00 PM | Women's Soccer
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Late in the first half, Princeton scored twice in just over eight minutes to account for all of the game's scoring as the Tigers downed the Lehigh women's soccer team, 2-0 on Tuesday evening. The Mountain Hawks controlled play for long portions of the game, but couldn't string 90 minutes together and the regionally-ranked Tigers, who are also receiving votes in the national polls, proved too much to handle.
Â
"They are a great team, but so are we and I think we can play with just about anybody," said Lehigh head coach Eric Lambinus. "And for parts of that game, I thought we did a really good job. But overall, there were too many moments when we weren't consistent and they took advantage in those spots. The goal for the next game is to be more consistent, more accountable and play a 90-minute game."
Â
Despite trailing 2-0 at the half, the Mountain Hawks held a 7-6 edge in shots and 3-1 advantage in corner kicks. Lehigh's best first-half chances came in the 37th minute after Princeton opened a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute. Junior Julianna Bonner had a shot blocked and that was immediately followed by a hard shot on goal, which was saved by Tigers' goalkeeper Tyler McCamey.
Â
Princeton doubled its lead in the 43rd minute following a save from sophomore Violette Bonvallet. Freshman Corinne Lyght had another Lehigh shot on goal in the 44th minute, but it was denied by McCamey.
Â
The Tigers held a 10-4 second-half shots advantage, but Bonvallet stood tall in goal with five saves. Included was a sensational stop in the 51st minute to keep Lehigh within two.
Â
Final shots were 16-11 in favor of Princeton while the Mountain Hawks held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. Bonvallet tallied a career-high eight saves while McCamey made four.
Â
The Mountain Hawks will now hit the road on Saturday for a big Patriot League showdown at American. Opening kickoff is set for 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
