BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Looking to remain in a strong position in the Patriot League standings, and possibly even clinch a tournament berth, the Lehigh women's soccer team is ready for a Saturday showdown at American University in Washington, D.C. Opening kickoff is set for 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
The Mountain Hawks are currently all alone in fifth place in the standings with 10 points, two points ahead of three teams tied for sixth with eight. One of them is Saturday's opponent, American, along with Army West Point and Colgate. If Lehigh beats the Eagles Saturday and Army loses to or ties Bucknell (Friday, 6 p.m.) or Colgate loses to or ties at Lafayette (Saturday, 2 p.m.), the Mountain Hawks would clinch their first Patriot League Tournament berth since 2018 – when they advanced to the championship game.
Lehigh is also only three points out of fourth and four points behind second, with a chance to get as high as second before the end of the regular season.
Lehigh is coming off a 2-0 defeat vs. Princeton on Tuesday, facing a regionally-ranked Tigers' team that was also receiving votes in the national polls. Late in the first half, Princeton scored twice in just over eight minutes for both of their goals. The Mountain Hawks controlled play for significant stretches, but couldn't put one past Tigers' goalkeeper Tyler McCamey. Lehigh's last Patriot League contest was last Saturday, a slim 1-0 loss at Loyola. The game before that, the Mountain Hawks picked up a thrilling, critical and last-second 2-1 home win over Colgate behind a pair of Corinne Lyght goals.
American last played at Colgate, and the game settled for a 1-1 tie at Beyer-Small Field. Julia Kato set a new career-high with 13 saves to help keep American in the game. Her 13 saves marked the most for an AU women's soccer goalkeeper in more than three years. Overall, the Eagles are 5-7-2, 2-3-2 in the league. Their Patriot League victories came consecutively – at Lafayette (4-3) and vs. Army West Point (1-0). Tate Jordan leads American in goals (5) and points (12) while Brooke Steel is right behind with nine points via four goals and one assist. For the season, Kato owns a 1.45 goals against average and 75.9 save percentage.
American leads the all-time series with Lehigh, 12-10-1 with four of the last five meetings occurring in Bethlehem. The Mountain Hawks have won four of the last five, all via 1-0 finals. In fact, the last 10 times they've played, the final score has been 1-0 (with each team winning five). In 2018, Lehigh beat American on the road for the first time in program history. Last spring, the Mountain Hawks defeated the Eagles behind a Bridget Casey goal.
Following Saturday's game, the Mountain Hawks close out the regular season next Wednesday, Oct. 27 hosting Bucknell at 6 p.m.
