Lehigh Narrowly Defeated By NJIT 2-1

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh women's soccer returned to the Ulrich Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon to take on the NJIT Highlanders. The Mountain Hawks held a 1-0 lead at halftime but ultimately fell by a score of 2-1.
Lehigh's (0-3) offense took center stage in the first half, as the Mountain Hawks outshot NJIT (1-1-1) 7-2 in the opening frame. Junior Esther Brossard lifted the Mountain Hawks to a 1-0 lead when she intercepted an NJIT pass and put the ball in the back of the net in the 30th minute. The Mountain Hawks held that 1-0 advantage into the locker room.
The Highlanders evened the score early in the second half thanks to a Taylor Stuart goal in the 54th minute. NJIT broke the tie in the 72nd minute on a Filipa Heintzelmann goal to push the Highlanders in front. Although Lehigh again outshot NJIT in the second half, Heintzelmann's goal ended up being the game-winner for the Highlanders.
Brossard led the charge offensively for Lehigh with four shots, two shots on goal, and a goal. Sophomore Lola Wojciechowski tallied two shots while first-year Sofia Bollman, senior Elliot Forney, senior Cathryn Cunningham, sophomore Paige Place, sophomore Eden Freeman Warren, first-year Margo Crandall, and senior Aminah Baruwa also recorded shots for the Mountain Hawks.
Sophomore goalkeeper Chloe Zipprich made two saves for the Mountain Hawks.
The Mountain Hawks return to action on Thursday, September 3 at 6 p.m. on the road at Drexel.
