GREENSVILLE, S.C. – After a low-scoring first half for both sides, the Lehigh women's lacrosse team outscored Furman 7-4 in the second to pull away from the Paladins for a 10-6 win on Saturday afternoon in South Carolina. Junior goalkeeper Samantha Sagi stopped eight of 10 shots sent her way in the first, finishing with 12 saves on the afternoon to anchor Lehigh's strong defensive effort. Freshman Katia Carnevale paced the offense with four goals while classmate Gabby Schneider added three. The Mountain Hawks improve to 5-2 on the season, ahead of a Monday evening showdown at Davidson.
Carnevale has now scored multiple goals in all seven games of her career. The three goals for Schneider marked her third straight hat trick, while she also added an assist. Schneider now has 14 goals and seven assists over her last three games. Senior Sondra Dickey filled up the stat sheet with a goal, assist, two groundballs, five draw controls and a caused turnover. Junior Cecily Redfern also had a goal and assist, along with two groundballs and two caused turnovers. Junior Maggie Kelly scored Lehigh's other goal.
The Mountain Hawks' defense was a big story all game, allowing their fewest goals all season. Just 5:03 into the contest, the score was tied at 2-2, with Lehigh's goals from Dickey and Schneider.
Over the remaining 25:59 of the half, the Mountain Hawks didn't allow a single goal, with Sagi stopping all seven shots sent her way in that span. With 3:16 on the first-half clock, Schneider scored her second to give Lehigh a 3-2 lead and score the game's first goal in 21:41.
The Paladins began the second half with two straight goals to retake a 4-3 lead. Like in the first, the Mountain Hawks had another big answer, outscoring Furman 7-2 the rest of the game. Carnevale began with a natural hat trick, scoring three straight goals at the – 22:28, 20:42 and 14:14 marks – to put the Mountain Hawks in front, 6-4. Furman netted two of the next three to pull within 7-6 with 3:54 remaining, but goals from Schneider, Redfern and Kelly erased any doubt.
Final shots were even at 26, Furman held a 15-14 edge in groundballs and Lehigh finished with an 11-7 advantage in draw controls. Both goalkeepers stood tall. Along with Sagi's 12 saves, Furman's Meghan Deehan made 13.
The Mountain Hawks return to action in two days, finishing their road swing down south with a 6:30 p.m. opening draw at Davidson. It will mark Lehigh's final tune-up before Patriot League play.
