Women's Tennis hosts NJIT and Buffalo this weekend

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Off to one of its best starts in program history, the Lehigh women's tennis team (5-2) will host two matches this weekend inside the Lewis Indoor Tennis Center, as the Mountain Hawks will welcome in the NJIT Highlanders and the Buffalo Bulls.
LAST TIME OUT
The Brown and White won their fifth match of the season, defeating the Duquesne Dukes at home, 6-1. After obtaining the doubles point in thanks to the top two pairs, the Mountain Hawks rattled off five wins in singles to secure the victory. Sibel Can and Casey Zhong won in straight sets, while Paula Gonzalez and Junmoke James won in three sets. Sarah Hua picked up her first win of the season in singles.

"It was another thrilling Saturday at the Lewis Tennis Center. The women played their hearts out and emerged victorious. Although we are off to a very solid start, we have plenty of tough matches still to come," said assistant coach Hannah Fleckenstein. "I am sure the girls can't wait for their off day, but I honestly can't way for practice on Monday. The energy and drive the women bring is exciting and inspiring to be around."
CAN YOU FEEL IT?
Sibel Can was in the news yesterday, as the senior was awarded the Patriot League Player of the Week. Last weekend, Can played the No. 1 singles match and defeated Duquesne's Laurel Shmansky in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1. The senior leader also picked up a No. 1 doubles win against the top Dukes' tandem, 6-3. She is currently 4-3 at the top spot in singles, while tallying a 4-1 record in doubles.
ABOUT NJIT
The Highlanders are currently 6-3 on the season, while notably defeating quality teams. NJIT has defeated. Army West Point, UCONN, Fairleigh Dickinson and Sacred Heart. Big Ten Rutgers, St. John's and Penn have defeated the Highlanders. Joleta Budiman is 4-1 at the top spot in singles, Amira Badawi is a perfect 4-0 at the No. 3 spot and Mouna Bouzgarrou is a near-perfect 5-1 at the No. 5 spot.
ABOUT BUFFALO
The Upstate New York Bulls are an impressive 5-1 team coming into Bethlehem. Buffalo has rattled off wins against St. Bonaventure, Niagara, Cleveland State and Youngstown State. The Bulls' lone hiccup came against West Virginia, 5-2. At the top spot, Pia Schwarz is 6-1 in singles, Emel Abibula is 5-1 in singles and Gabrilla Akopyan is also 5-1 at the No. 3 spot. Their top three players have a combined 16-3 record.
PREVIOUS MEETINGS
The Mountain Hawks fell to the Highlanders last year at home, 6-1, while Buffalo and Lehigh have never met before. Saturday's meeting with the Bulls will be the first-ever battle between the two teams.

The Mountain Hawks will head south for warm weather, as the Lehigh women's tennis team will compete in three matches down in Florida. The women will face USF, St. Thomas Aquinas and Wesleyan. The first match against USF is on Sunday, March 8.
