
Women's Tennis drops home match to NJIT on Friday evening; host Buffalo on Saturday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's tennis team suffered its third defeat of the season on Friday evening, as the Highlanders of NJIT came into the Lewis Indoor Tennis Center and defeated the Mountain Hawks, 6-1.
The Mountain Hawks had to play catch up in this one, as the Highlanders took the doubles point after winning all three doubles matches. The Brown and White didn't make it easy for NJIT, all three matches were closely contested. The No.1 doubles pair of Sibel Can and Paula Gonzalez dropped a close 7-5 match to the top NJIT tandem. The No. 2 and No. 3 pairs both lost 6-3.
In singles, the senior Can, the reigning Patriot League Player of the Week, showed grit and toughness at the No. 1 spot. After dropping the first set to Joleta Budiman, 6-2, the senior then rattled off wins in back-to-back sets to claim the victory, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
The Mountain Hawks couldn't start a rally from there, as the Highlanders took the next five singles matches to obtain the victory. The rest of the five singles matches ended in straight sets with the favor going towards NJIT. In the No. 6 spot, Sarah Hua took the second set to a tiebreaker. At the No. 4 spot, freshman Ella Imhof came close to winning a set but ended up dropping both, 6-4, 6-4.
Despite the loss, the women's tennis team (5-3) still sit in a good spot and will welcome in the Buffalo Bulls for a 2:00 p.m. showdown on Saturday afternoon. The upcoming match will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
