Mountain Hawks make things interesting, fall to Davidson to close series

2/16/2020 4:19:00 PM | Baseball

DAVIDSON, N.C. — Trailing 3-0 early, the Lehigh baseball team battled back in the fourth and sixth innings to tie things up at 3. However, Davidson pushed seven runs across in the final two innings to come away with a 10-3 victory Sunday afternoon at Wilson Field. The Wildcats come away with a series sweep, as the Mountain Hawks will wait until Richmond next weekend to go for their first win of the 2020 season.

Davidson got the best of junior right-hander Matt Svanson in the bottom of the first inning with three runs on two hits.

Svanson ended up settling in after a rough first inning that saw him give up the three runs on two hits with a couple of walks. He ended up throwing six strong innings, with three runs allowed on five hits with four strikeouts and a pair of walks.

The top of the fourth inning was eventful for Lehigh as Tyler Schreiner started it off with a single to center field. Tony Gallo followed him up with a single to the shortstop. With two outs, Mike Maguire walked on four pitches to load the bases. Freshman Zack Miles had his moment, a two-RBI single on the first pitch to center field to bring home Gallo and Schreiner to cut the deficit to 3-2.

For the second time on the day, Miles came through for Lehigh in the top of the sixth inning. Back-to-back singles from Casey Rother and Mike Maguire set up another moment for the freshman with two runners on. Miles singled to right field, scoring Rother to tie the game up at 3.

Davidson would come right back and score in the bottom of the seventh inning after a runner scored on an error, leading 4-3.

Two more runs came across to score in the seventh with a two-RBI single, giving the Wildcats a 6-3 lead. Davidson scored four more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, off a single and a three RBI double. That would be the end of the scoring, with Davidson coming out with a 10-3 victory.

Miles went 2-for-4 with three RBIs to pace the Mountain Hawks, while Gallo went 2-for-5 with a pair of singles. Gerard Sweeney, Schreiner, Rother and Maguire each had a single hit for the team. In addition to his hit and run scored, Schreiner also walked twice, two of Lehigh's six on the day.

Freshman Carlos Torres was charged with the loss in his collegiate debut, throwing 1/3 of an inning, allowing three runs on one hit with two walks and a strikeout. Freshman Will Grisack also made his debut for the Brown and White, pitching 2/3 of a scoreless inning with no hits allowed.

Most notably on the weekend, senior Tony Gallo hit .417 (5-for-12) on the weekend with a double and two walks. Gallo finished with a slugging percentage of .500, an on-base percentage of .500 and an OPS of 1.000 in three games.

The Mountain Hawks start the 2020 season off 0-3 for the second consecutive season, heading to Richmond next season looking for their first win of the campaign.
