BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Despite getting the series started a day later than anticipated, the Lehigh baseball team is back on the road this weekend at Richmond for a three-game series. The Mountain Hawks open the series with the Spiders Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader planned for Sunday with a 10 a.m. start time.

Lehigh is coming off three straight losses to Davidson last weekend in Opening Weekend, out-scored by the Wildcats 25-9 in the trio of games.

Over the course of the opening weekend, the Mountain Hawks were offensively led by senior Tony Gallo, who finished with a batting average of .417 with five hits, a double, a run scored and two walks. Gallo was ultimately named an honorable mention by the Patriot League for his performance.

Aside from Gallo, junior Tyler Schreiner also swung the bat well, hitting .364 with a double, three runs scored and two walks. Freshman Zack Miles struggled in the first two games, but led Lehigh on Sunday with a 2-for-4 day with three RBIs.

On the mound, it was a rough season debut for both Mason Black and Luke Rettig, who came into the season with sky-high expectations. Black went five innings in the first game against Davidson, allowing five runs on five hits with two walks and only two strikeouts. Rettig threw Game 2, pitching just three innings, allowing seven runs, five earned on four hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

Matt Svanson threw the final game of the series and settled in after allowing three runs in the first innings. He ended up going six strong innings, allowing the three runs on five hits with four strikeouts. A smattering of young hurlers made their collegiate debuts over the weekend, including freshman Ryan Deom, who threw three innings of two-hit ball with five strikeouts. Junior right-hander Yash Rane was excellent in his three innings of relief, allowing no runs on two hits with two strikeouts.

Against the Wildcats in the third game, Lehigh hit its best of the series with a team batting average of .235, gathering eight hits with six walks.

Richmond comes into the weekend still searching for its first win of the campaign after coming close to knocking off No. 4 Georgia in two of its three games against the Bulldogs in Athens last weekend. The Spiders then fell to James Madison on Tuesday, 12-4.

The opponent is led by Drew Blakeley who has hit .429 (6-for-14) in three games with three RBIs. Former Lafayette outfielder Dan Leckie has hit .400 (4-for-10) with a double, run scored and an RBI. In addition to Leckie, former Bucknell third baseman Dominic Toso is on the Spiders' roster as a junior transfer. Toso has hit .211 in the first four games of the season.

On the mound, starter Jacob Marcus leads the way with a 2.08 ERA in 4.1 innings of work. He allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits with four strikeouts in his first start of the year. Tim Miller has a 4.91 ERA with the one start, going 3.2 innings with two runs allowed on four hits with four strikeouts.

As a team, the Spiders have a 5.88 ERA allowing 33 runs, 22 earned on 44 hits in 33.2 innings.

Lehigh leads the all-time series against Richmond, 5-3 with the last matchup coming during the 2018 season.

All three games will have live stats provided with both of Sunday's games set to be streamed live on ESPN+.
