BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After the high emotions and excitement after last weekend's dominating performance against rival Lafayette, the Lehigh women's track and field team will look to move on with two more competitions on Saturday. Lehigh will have athletes compete in the Bruce Lehane/Scarlet & White from Boston University, while others will compete at the Villanova Invitational at Ocean Breeze in Staten Island.
Last time out, the Brown and White mustered together 15 wins in an impressive showing against Lafayette. 115-66, that was the final score in which gave Lehigh its 12th straight win over the Leopards. Brett DeWeese won two events in the 60mH (8.86) and the long jump (5.67). Jade Sessions impressed in the 1000m (2:55.85), Brooke Schaeffer continued her stellar start to the season with a win in the 500m (1:17.62). The powerful duo of Brittany Curtin and Teasha McKoy is proving to be a force in the throws, winning the weight throw and shot put.
"We have to look at the things we did well at. We won a lot of events and 12 of our athletes notched personal PRs," head coach Matt Utesch said. "The Rivalry brings a level of intensity that you don't see every week. Brett is a perfect example of what the Lehigh-Lafayette duel meet can bring out of an athlete. She rose to the occasion.
The sophomore Sessions was named honorable mention by the Patriot League for her performance in the 1000m last Saturday.
"Jade is the future of the distance group. She's tough as nails, a future leader and she's a pleasure to see on the track," Utesch said. "I have to give credit to my wife, Debbie Utesch, she does a phenomenal job with that group. Jade has bought in and has trusted us since day one. Jade loves the way Deb relates to her."
The event in Boston will start at 1:30 p.m., while the Villanova Invitational at Ocean Breeze will start at 4:00 p.m.
"We can't squander away any opportunities to compete. The truth is, we need to capture every moment we get. We're chasing marks. It's time to turn the page and be ready to compete on Saturday." Utesch explained.
Notable athletes competing in Staten Island will be DeWeese, Curtin, McKoy, Bree Smentkowski, Morgan McConnell, Carly Carpino, Camari Griffin and Madisyn Hawkins. Some key Brown and White members who will be traveling to Boston include Sessions, Schaeffer, Diana Hammerstone, Ashleigh Crawford and Susie Poore.
"We need to build off of last week and keep it rolling," Utesch claimed. "Winning is a habit. Our girls need to expect to win. When you expect to win, you're more competitive.
Up next, the Mountain Hawks will return to Ocean Breeze on Friday, Feb. 7. This time, the University at Albany will be hosting an event.
