DMR Sets School record at Penn Relays, Team Dominates Covert Classic

BETHLEHEM, Pa./PHILADELPHIA - Lehigh women's track and field had a big weekend with two prominent meets on the schedule. The Mountain Hawks competed at the historic Penn Relays from Tuesday through Saturday, and hosted the Carol & John Covert Classic at the Goodman Campus Track & Field Complex on Friday and Saturday.
Penn Relays
Lehigh demolished the school record in the distance medley relay. Lauryn Heskin, Lauren Bower, Amber Barrios, and Abby Klebe ran 11:09.39, annihilating the school record by 15.94 seconds en route to a second place finish. They were one of four teams that broke the Penn Relays event record.
The 4x400 meter relay advanced to the College section final by dropping 3:44.13, the second fastest outdoor 4x400 meter relay time in team history. Grace Kennedy, Kasey White, Kayleigh Jamieson, and Jade Sanders placed third overall in the final, running 3:47.75.
Grace Hughes and Grace Kennedy opened up the action in Philadelphia on Thursday evening. Hughes had a personal best in the 5000 meters. The junior ran 16:41.98, making her the second fastest outdoor 5000 meter runner in Lehigh history. She placed 43rd at the meet. Kennedy placed 26th in the 400 meter hurdles. The senior ran 1:00.80.
Lehigh placed 22nd in the 4x100 meter relay. Maggie Scalzo, Harper Glennon, Faith Schiffer, and Gianna Mangili ran 47.88.
Grace Aggen competed in two different events on Friday. She started the day in the shot put, throwing 13.36 meters to place 18th. She followed that up with a 14th place performance in the discus throw, tossing the disc 44.21 meters. Meghan Miller also threw on Friday, but in the javelin throw. The junior threw 35.53 meters, placing 26th.
Covert Classic
Hammer and javelin throw opened the action in Bethlehem. Lehigh had two top seven finishers in javelin. Peyton Lewis led the way in fourth, throwing 36.20 meters. Melani Dowling threw a personal record to place seventh. The first-year threw the spear 32.68 meters. Olivia Dubrow was Lehigh's top thrower in the hammer throw. The sophomore placed 11th, throwing 40.13.
Lehigh won all four jumping events to bring on Senior Day. Senior Melanie LaCorte won the high jump, equaling her season's best mark of 1.55 meters. Gaea DePass also cleared the 1.55 meter bar, but placed fourth due to the number of attempts. Senior Grace Nation won the long jump, leaping 5.21 meters. Charlotte Deforest was the runner-up in the event, clearing 5.18 meters. Nation also won the triple jump, soaring 11.70 meters. Casey Talamini-Kelemen was the runner-up, jumping 11.05 meters. Laura Reigle won the pole vault, jumping 4.05 meters. That mark ranks her 89th in Division I. Sarah Goode jumped an eight centimeter overall personal best to place third. She moves up to sixth on Lehigh's all-time outdoor performance list. Lena Perlmutter earned fourth, clearing 3.30 meters.
Lehigh swept the 400 meter event, taking all of the top five spots. Abby Klebe led the way to win. The senior ran 56.33, improving on her fifth place all-time mark. Lauren Bower and Adelaide Videon-Perino both ran personal records to round out the top three. Bower ran an all-time personal record as the runner-up in 59.08, and Videon-Perino ran 59.15 as an outdoor personal best to place third. Lanae Carrington placed fourth with 59.23, and Sophia Lee ran 1:01.73 to finish fifth.
The Mountain Hawks also swept the 800 meter run, all in personal best time. Lauryn Heskin won the event in 2:09.73, improving on her sixth all-time mark for Lehigh. Zoe Louis improved her best by three seconds to finish as the runner-up, crossing the line at 2:15.28. Hope Trimmer ran 2:16.95 to take third, improving her personal best by half of a second.
Both hurdle events resulted in Lehigh first-year wins. Lyssi Penn and Faith Schiffer took the top two spots in the 100 meter hurdles. Penn won in 14.82, and Schiffer was the runner-up in 15.20. Maggie Scalzo won the 400 meter hurdles in personal best fashion. She ran 1:05.83, lowering her record by 2.6 seconds.
The Mountain Hawks owned four of the top five spots in the 200 meter dash. Gianna Mangili won the event in 25.66. Carrigton finished third (26.68), Videon-Perino placed fourth (26.68), and Corinn Brewer was fifth (26.91).
Grace Aggen and Alyson Marmor both earned top four spots in the shot put. Aggen won the event in 13.03, and Marmor improved her personal best by 36 centimeters to 12.12 meters to take fourth. Both athletes also placed well in the discus throw. Aggen was a runner-up with a 43.71-meter throw, and Marmor threw 34.50m to place seventh.
Lehigh had three top eight finishers in the 1500 meter run. Lily Schindler won the event in 4:43.18. Lucy Afanasewicz placed sixth in 4:51.82, and Jacqueline Gifford ran 4:52.83 to place eighth.
Chloe Browne set an outdoor personal record to finish third in the 5000 meter run, running 18:50.97. Elisa Brear took fourth, finishing in a season's best 19:01.77.
Mallory Sherrer placed fourth in the 3000 meter steeplechase. The first-year finished in 12:13.08.
Lehigh competes next in their annual dual meet against Lafayette. The Rivalry, presented by Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute, part of Jefferson Health will take place Saturday, May 2.
